They have some sexy altenators out there, water cooled, and those which are more "efficient" which are clutched and other gizmos. However, the real McCoys are around $1,000 bucks which is double what I paid for the car so that is a project down the road. But yes, they do have such a beast.

Some aluminum Porn

I was slacking a little on the MB lately. My Dad was in the ICU for a week, and when he got out it was constant catch up. He's been home for at least a month now, so all is well ... so far.

I still have a handful of injector sets to get out ... BUT, I got some goodies in the mail today.

Here are my custom made plates for the EWP conversion. This is actually Housing 2.0. I temporarily scrapped the idea of a slimmed down version for the OEM with a blocking plate. This is actually my 3rd variation, but I won't count the first effort since that was total R&D, sizing, et cet. This works well right now and I am supper happy with this.

These are machined precisely and they include the tab on them which fits precisely into the OEM housing. I got 5 of these made, so once I wrap up the installation of the EWP, and assuming smooth sailing, then I got 4 to sell if anyone wants to go that route. Right now, this is the final stages of R&D for the EWP conversion.

I also got the fittings for the monster 60 plate HE. I am thinking I will tinker this weekend and maybe even mount the HE and relocate the battery to the trunk. That relocation is only temporary since it looks like one can relocate the battery to under the back seat, passenger side. I was totally wrong about that idea. It looks very do-able at this point and I like the idea of the battery under the back seat vs. trunk. I am liking the idea of a neat and clean trunk, with the electric vacuum pump tucked inside the spare tire well.

The Sleeper Part Deux is still at the paint shop, but the paint guy does not mind me swinging by and tinkering. We'll see. The car has only been at the paint shop for about two months. LOL. The fenders, hood, and AMG chin look incredible. I am thinking of maybe just getting all the dings, rusty lower driver's side quarter done, and having the car look new again. The W123s look stunning when restored. I am just getting a little impatient since many of these screwball projects are coming together and I am getting tired of buying gas ... miss burning the grease.

The machinest is named Donald Neisler, and he runs Reno Machine Works. His email is: sales@renomachineworks.com

He is priced incredibly fair. Period. He spent way too much time on me . His customer service is 100% and is way above and beyond the call of duty. I cannot say enough nice things about his work and the care he took with my screw ball projects. The only problem now is convincing him to do another one of my screw ball projects ... All jokes aside. He's incredibly talented and made it a point to assist in the R&D and he made sure I ended up with the items I was trying to explain to him.

people have to pay machine shops to make "screwey projects"?
I thought everybody had em in their pockets to make stuff for them...
another perk of being so good at stuff all the time I guess...
My HVAC and Computer networking skills keep me in good with the "trades" I guess....

AND, the good news. I got your old engie tipity top ! A little water injection, about 2 weeks worth, (very low volume .75 GPH nozzle) and guess what ? The PSI is around 375-ish on every cylinder. I am thinking that the rings got stuck somehow.

The bad news. I just got called out of town for a week, so I need to really hustle on some injectors tonight or they will be waiting until Friday or Saturday. Thank Goodness the holiday is coming up.

And, J-Man -- That is the price of gas in my neck of the woods. It was around $3.07, but it jumped this past week. Diesel is still high ... $3.57 a gallon.

I will post some pictures of the fenders. They had some very very unusual rot and rust issues. Both sides, same exact deal. You got me. The hood was a P-A-P quicky, not bad shape but wrong color.

I will get some pictures of the finished product shortly. I wish I had this week to clean up my garage and tinker with some projects. Poop
(If the rings were stuck) I have thought about it and suspect its because the way my daughter was driving it back and forth to Lafayette and around Muncie the engine never got good and hot because it was only pulling about 2500 rpm on the highway running 55 or 60. With the very tall gearing it probably needs to be run 75 to get it good and hot on a regular basis to keep it all clean.

Glad you got it all running to your satisfaction now!

Are you putting the turbo on that motor?

IIRC he has a 617a that will go in. The 617 he has now was more of a test bench to play around with stuff.

Bingo ... the NA drivetrain was my R&D backdrop. If something went horribly wrong, no biggie IMO. So far, so good.

I got my 617a from a 1985 300D. It has ceramic coated pistons, SureSeal rings, a mod'd pump by Goran, mod'd injectors, no Power Steering (manual), manual brakes in the making, vacuum pump delete, 115 long runner intake, 150 AMP altenator, and the list goes on. The goal was the reduction of parasitic drag off the engine and ultra simplicity. I am thinking of getting the engine bay painted before dropping in the "real" engine. The five speed is a Getrag 717.400 just like the one I got now, except is shifts flawlessly.

I don't think one can hook up a turbo to a NA engine without running into the possibilities of problems down the road.

I still plan on finishing the 300D NA engine. I got the mod'd intake, and other goodies to hook up plus I have to drive that around for a while to make sure all of my R&D is without any problems before I switch out the drivetrains. I am thinking Spring or early summer 2014 for the swap. That should be enough time.

2014 or 2016?

You can turbo NA engines if you watch your temps. The 616 guys just fine.

2014 I am hoping ... LOL. Like most of my projects, there's a ton of prep and when it comes time to execute, delays and delays, but when I get it done, it turns out to be incredibly easy and quick.

Just visited the machine shop about an hour ago about my engine ... shooting for total completion by the end of December. After that, its just painting - detailing the engine bay and poping the turbo'd engine in the old girl. Sounds simple ... huh

The ol'e girl is home

My car was in the paint shop for over 5 months. Actually, a guy in the country who has a paint booth in his back yard. The car is now home.

I am 98% happy with the work. Some tiny details, but the price was very fair and generous overall. I can fix the few picky items myself. I am now forced to paint the whole car. LOL. The front clip's color is how this car most likely looked when it left Germany. I really like the "new" color alot.

Got my AMG chin finally installed. Front clip is now rust free and blemish free. I hope to get the bumper and grill finished and installed so that I can drive it around this weekend.

Some minor work this weekend

With the nicer, warmer weather, I got a few odds and ends done.

Dyed the plastic cowl covers, installed the lights, dyed my grill insert, and getting ready for the Euro Bumper. Now waiting on my rubber dye.

Getting ready for some mechanical work next weekend !
