Removing Rear Flange Nut, 722.4 Transmission

Car is '96 W210 E300. I'm going to replace the output seal on the transmission while the driveshaft is out. Is it OK to use the parking interlock to hold the assembly from turning while removing and installing the nuts? Or do I need to back it up with something else? I will not be using impact tools or hammers. The repair procedures I've found aren't specific, saying merely "put the trans in park and remove the nut".

Thanks!

I believe that is one way to remove the nut. However, if you had a way to hold the yoke in addition to the parking locking mechanism, that would be better. I could see a couple bolts going through the yoke, and a pry bar between them, holding the yoke.

Thanks for the reply ROLLGUY. I tried using two bolts with a pry per your suggestion but I didn't have enough arms, hands, and fingers to manage everything so I resorted to using the parking interlock which worked fine. I was able to remove the peened down metal from the groove before going for it, but even then it took a cheater pipe on the breaker bar to get it loose. This job kinda sucks when crawling around under the car on concrete (better than dirt, yes) but now it's done. Thanks again.

Hah! Wait another 20 years! Two things happen. You get a lot taller (don't think so? Try bending down to get the nut/screw/wrench which is just RIGHT there) and gravity gets a lot stronger. It's a heckuva lot harder to get up from a prone position.

One of my favorite quotes is from George Burns. He said,"You know you are getting old when you stoop to tie your shoe laces and wonder what else you could do while you're down there".

Yeah, I hear ya. I'm mid-40s and still pretty spry, but by the time I get to the 50th up-n-down it's a lot slower than it was at the start of the day. I do try to anticipate needs and pile up all the parts, tools, towels, etc. I'll need while I'm under, but there's always that one thing I forget.

20 years from now? or ?
