Drive-shaft length 240/300D W123

Anyone have/know the lengths of the drive-shafts front half for a 240D Auto, and the length of the 300D 4spd manual shift...?

Thanks!

No, but if you are looking for how much to shorten the 240 Shaft for a 300D/manual trans converison have them lop off 4". Check out R Leo's Manual swap thread for more info.

This is the plan.....

I have a 617 that needs re-building...Its complete with its 4 speed trans and front-half of prop-shaft.

I have a 615 that is in pretty fair running condition. It is complete engine only.

I have a M.B. 280TE Auto, and want to fit the 615 in and use while I re-build the 617, by which time I Should have a 5 speed box and drive-shaft for it to replace the 615 and auto-box complete....

The 616/615 are pretty much the same length, and thats why I ask about the 240D Auto prop/drive-shaft as its more common than a W123 220D or 200D....

The Auto-box from the 280TE will fit on the OM 615, as it has the same engine back-plate, even down to the Part-Number. The Torque-Converter from the 280TE M110 will also fit on the OM 615, as done by a member here, in reverse.

As the engine-mounting out-riggers are centreline just behind the rear of nos. 2 pot on both the 617 and the 615, the front of the engine sits in the same position in the chassis, But as the 615 only has 4 pots, the gearbox will sit further forward than if it was on a 617 as the engine is shorter by 1 pot.

However, The Auto-box is longer from flange to bell-housing than a 4spd Manual, but by how much I have no clue, as its still in the car attached to ther M110......

Any ideas....?

Guess what I should have asked IF my brain was working, is How long is an Automatic Gearbox from Bell to flange...

I recently did a manual 200D -> 617.952 using the drive shaft and linkage from my euro. If you dont have the 300D drive shaft you probably wont be happy, alot of people complain about vibrations (300D has a vinbration dampener). I dont know about 240D autos but I can get you the specs on what a 300D drive shaft should be. Length doesnt have to be ALL the precise. My 200D had about 1.5" of exposed vanes where the shafts meet up.

Resurrecting an old thread instead of starting a new one.

How much should I shorten the drive shaft for my swap? Putting an OM617a into my '79 240D. I have the front part of the driveline off, before the carrier bearing - I'm assuming this is the only part I will need to shorten. Not sure of the part number, but I will check it tomorrow.

Thanks
Max

I may be wrong in this, as I have not tried it. However, if you can find a shaft from a 240 automatic, it might be the correct length for use in a 123 with a 5 cyl and 4 speed. The 240 auto crossmember is needed for this conversion as well. It could be that the auto trans is similar more in length than the manual, as the 5 cyl is to the four cyl (the same 4"?).

I am planning to put a manual (from my dead 240) in my '82 300CD, and I am hoping that the 240 auto parts car I have will give up it's driveshaft, and that it will be the correct length. I already sold the crossmember, so I will need to source another one.
