I said that YOU are Bush-bashing and trolling for an argument when there's FAR more important things going on (and obviously I have fallen for it), and no one wants to hear it.

true story from today.

I have a friend whose son owns a small recording studio. The son and his employee, thinking ahead, shrink-wrapped their (extremely expensive) electronics and put it under a tarp in a boat. They went home (across the street. Next morning they saw a couple of boneheads (named gotta and diesel, I suspect) dumping the gear over the side to steal the boat.

The son grabbed a floating 2x4 and beat the $hit out of one of the guys while the employee beat the $hit out of the other guy. Then they chained the two perps to the boat in th erain and rising water. Eventually a sheriff showed up.

The perps complained to the sheriff that they'd be killed and begged to be taken into custody. Sheriff said, "I don't give a $hit. If they'd killed you nobody would have cared." Then he hauled the two guys in.

Yeah, that sucks.... but I'll get over it.

By the way, I really admire what you're doing for the hurricane relief effort. A LOT of people talk, but not many people put their money (or efforts) where their mouth is. Bravo to you.

It's one of those things, Mike. If it had been a volcanic eruption in Hawai'i, MTI would've been all over it. I still wish that I could've gone to NYC to help on 9/11. Proximity is everything.

For younger guys, there's the military. There is something about intense situations that bonds people. I believe it affects men more than women (is that cultural? I don't know). Once you've experienced it, the memory of the exhiliration never leaves you. Even lard-assed old plow-horses can still hear the bugle at the starting gate. I do everything I can to encourage my young charges to volunteer. If for the experience if nothing else. And there is far, far more than personal experience.

This is where my liberal social conscience makes me think like a die-hard conservative. I'm okay with stealing food and water, just because of the conditions down there, and the fact that none of these stores are likely to be open... but stealing like televisions and stereos and GUNS of all things - I read an article in the LA Times that some police officers in rescue operations were being SHOT by looters - reading about that stuff just makes me want to scream.

I mean, an act of God completely destroys a city of a half-million people, people are homeless, out of food and water, and even DYING, the authorities are busy trying to save the people that are left - these are supposed to be times when people are supposed to be selfless, pitch in and band together for the common good - and all some people can think about is stealing a television???

There's been a lot of talk about helping the victims of Katrina, well, the City of Houston is doing what it can to help. The Harris County Sports Authority (I think that's what the organization is called) and the Red Cross have utilized the Houston Astrodome for another purpose. Commonly called the 8th wonder of the world, the 40 year old world's first domed stadium has all events cleared through December and will house refugees from the Superdome, it's going to take 2 days and almost 700 buses to get them all here, in fact, the first bus arrived earlier tonight. The Houston Independent School District is letting children from affected areas of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama attend HISD elementary schools for a month without shot records. Local colleges are waiving certain fees to let students continue their education away from home. Local sports events like the Houston Comets games, and the TSU vs. PV Labor Day Classic football game will be able to be seen for free by refugees too. There's free admission to museums, restaurants are offering discounts, there are even telethons being aired locally to raise money to help the victims. I'm sure there's lots of other stuff going on to help to that I've forgotten, but we're trying to do our part. We've got Louisiana license plates and even a few NO taxicabs in town. They're going to be here for quite a while, so we've got to do our part.
