No kidding. I mean, I would hate for fellow americans who lost their city, their homes, their jobs, and often other family members to think for one second that they were entitled to anything. I mean, at least make them swim in the cess pool some more and pick up some if this damn mess. Otherwise, we're just creating a whole new class of dependent people-disaster victims. Its just bad public policy, plain and simple.
From now one, they'll all expect high fashion clothing and debit cards to be used buying jug wine and cigs while they wait for subsidized housing to be built, never again to return to productive life, cuz hey man, life's just too good when you're partying in the 'dome, sporting your Fubus and spendin' that sick bird 2K on necessities. |

bunch of cheap petty no compassion having bastards. It's two freaking grand! It's piss in the ocean compared to the billions they are going to drop on this thing. And you want them shoveling sludge? If I lost everything in the world because of this clusterfukk and someone handed me a shovel I'd whack him over the head with it.

You miss the point....if they are working they are not brooding.....if you have ever been laid off during a rough hiring period you would understand this point.
it gives them something to do and is good for them...physically and mentally.

generally i think you are an idiot. but this time sir you have shown brilliance in your thinking. i salute you. i echo your comments; free $2000 my fat hairy ass. how about you do something for that 2 grand. you shouldn't have been living 6ft below sea level in the first place. and you shoulda got out when you heard the hurrican was coming. now, where do i line up to get my 2 grand from the northridge earthquake 11 years ago? and where and when does this stop? if a cyclone passes through kansas and destroys a field of corn (lets just say) is someone supposed to be compensated for that too?

"Arbeit Macht Frei" (Work Brings Freedom) was the sign over the gates of Auschwitz. It was placed there by Major Rudolf Hoss, commandant of the camp. He seems not to have intended it as a mockery, nor even to have intended it literally, as a false promise that those who worked to exhaustion would eventually be released, but rather as a kind of mystical declaration that self-sacrifice in the form of endless labor does in itself bring a kind of spiritual freedom. ---- I googled it.

Does something else make more sense?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Maroon.. Something similar happened in 96 with the flooding of the Mississippi A female governor demanded that comfort money be handed out to citizens who were deprived of their residences. The amount was smaller, (about $100 to $300 but the intent was the same. Considering that many of the evacuated were single mothers on welfare, and their checks were likely not going to be cashed this month, the idea of a debit card is a good one. Women with babies and young children are not likely to be very good at cleaning up a storm damaged street unless they are able to drive front-end-loaders or use chain saws. These people have little left... At least this will give them some self-respect and maybe a glimmer of hope. it will also boost the economy of wherever they happen to spend the money. I would be upset if the looters were also given the $2K, but that does not seem too likely I am waiting for some media outlet to suggest that the money would have been better spent on social workers who would counsel these poor souls in their time of need... Did anyone see the total amount to be given out: $13 billion
Now, I calculate as follows: 1 million people get a card (sounds about right???) $2,000 per card. Do the math.............................. Where the hell does $13 billion come from?? In reality, I'm not sure if there are 1 million adults who are the "head of household". |

The administration formally asked Congress for $51.8 billion in relief and recovery expenses in addition to $10.5 billion already approved, calling it the latest installment, but not the last. "We will in fact need substantially more" money, said budget director Josh Bolten, estimating the money would cover expenses for "a few weeks."
Bolten said about half of the newly requested funds would take the form of direct aid to individuals, and the administration said that included an estimated 320,000 of the $2,000 debit cards per household at a cost of $640 million. |

I think the debit cards combined with some form of identification system are an awesome idea. I think the UN should use this as well. People are pretty good at deciding what they want/need. Give them the opportunity to buy what they need and private industry will get what they want to them much faster/efficiently. No I don't think they should have to work for the 2 grand. I think they should electronically add an $1K extra per adult per month for a month or so. Just allowing them to buy a damn bus/plane ticket and move to a better area with temporary subsistance money will provide these people with a better life and save much more than having them cooped up and dependent on the government.

name whats wrong with giving them work to do..in exchange for money to live untill they get their acts together? Its good for their self esteme and self respect...and keeps them occupied in productive things rather than committing crimes. They get money to survive short term.. And work that needs done gets done... Why should they be paid to sit on their buts get fatter, make more babies and moan and whine about how its out problem to keep them happy when they chose to live next to the water below sea level...

Answer this: what exactly would you have a 68 year-old, disabled, African-American woman do as 'work' anyway?
