I don't know how it is her fault. Were there other witnesses nearby?

its a rather long and very personal story.. lets just say this.. her mother would never let her father take her and live in CT.. which would have been a better life for her since my uncle could provide for her better than her mother due to the fact he owned a company at the time.. he does well but i belive he is having some money issues lately.. they just built a barn and bought more land so they could have more grazing land for the horses.. i think the ultimate plan was to have a horse for ashley since i think she liked horses like me and my aunt do..

the only other witnesses are the person that called the police and the people that heard the shots fired

i just cant get over the fact that something like this happened... last we spoke of ashley was couple months ago when my unlce said he was almost there at getting her to CT... but then i heard nothing until this morning

Don,

Condolences on your loss. It's tragic for everyone concerned. I think that Bot had a great suggestion. Find someone you can talk to that'll help you wrap your head around this. It'll help more than you realize right now.

Matt.

Two Huntington Beach police officers fatally shot a 19-year-old woman Friday morning after she lunged at them with a knife, authorities said.

The officers were responding to a 911 call about 7:30 a.m. reporting that Ashley MacDonald was walking through her neighborhood near Sun View Park with a knife in her hand.

Investigators said they later learned she had just argued with her mother inside their apartment. The mother's arms were superficially cut a number of times during the fight, said Jim Amormino, spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Department, the investigating agency for officer-related shootings in Huntington Beach.

Amormino said his agency was investigating reports that MacDonald's fight with her mother was over an alleged rape of the young woman the previous night.

"She's a very nice girl," said Chris Guthrie, 23, a friend of MacDonald's. "A very traumatic thing happened to her last night."

Amormino said the officers repeatedly warned MacDonald, "Drop the knife," before firing. There were witnesses to the incident. Amormino said he didn't know the size of the knife.

The two officers, whose identities were not disclosed, were criticized by some in the neighborhood, near the Bella Terra shopping center, for using deadly force against the teen, but Amormino said they were not carrying less-lethal means of subduing the woman. He said the officers followed department training by firing into her upper torso.

MacDonald was rushed to Huntington Beach Hospital, where she died. When officers notified her mother, she became so distraught that she was also taken to the hospital for treatment, authorities said.

When the department's report is completed, it will be forwarded to the district attorney's office for review.

One of the officers had worked for the Huntington Beach police for 1 ½ years, and the other had three years' law enforcement experience.

"This is a tragic case — tragic for the officers too," Amormino said. "They found their lives threatened."

TheDon, though we can see there are many differing perspectives driven by many different interests, what I can doubtlessly say is that I'm sorry for your loss.

I am related to cops who pray they never have to be in a situation like this......they and I know it is in vain.

Adam
That's what I was thinking. Pepper spray and a baton on a 120 lb female would have been a piece of cake.

I'm sure it's tought to be a cop and there are a lot of good ones but it makes you wonder when you read about the questionable uses of Tasers and then a case like this where it would have been far preferable to bullets.

All the best Don.

I agree. But let’s keep in mind that none of us were there. None of us were in the officers shoes. It sounds to me that though less force perhaps could have been used, they did as they were trained to do. And many officers have been trained by headlines that read:

Huntington Beach Police Officer is stabbed to death by a teen strung out on PCP as partner fires full voltage with tazer to no avail. Officer leaves behind loving wife and two young children...

Yes, it’s sad. I’m sorry for the loss of life. I’m sorry this happened to a forum members family. Any family for that matter. Being someone we heard about on CNN wouldn’t change the facts any though. And shouldn’t change our point of view for an open discussion here.

However - Use of deadly force topics are like discussing politics. I vote for passing our condolences to Don and his family and moving on.

It is sad . On the bright side, she's in a better place now anyway.

Oh my God...I didn't expect to see anything like this on here today!

Don, this is terrible and I'm sorry to hear about it. I hope you will be able to come to peace with what has happened someday...I've never experienced anything like this and can only imagine what it must be like.

Police in general are very well-trained in this country, but they are known to lack training when it comes to dealing with the mentally ill. I don't know much about your cousin but it seems pretty clear she wasn't in her right mind.

Certainly questions are raised by this story but I don't feel like it's fair for me to speculate on what could or should have happened, given that we have an incomplete picture of the facts here. I do feel bad for the officers involved as well as Ashley's family. No matter what they did right or wrong they will never forget this incident. It just goes to show that when that very important split second arises, you better make the right decision.

In any event one thing we do know is that there are no winners here. Again, I wish you the best, and I wish there was something more meaningful I could say.
