If you are not used to it just putting one of those little packages of snuff under your liip for five minutes will make you dizzy and nausious....don't ask how I know.

I did it on a bet once.

I'm not gonna Google for confirmation, I'm on a roll here.

If I remember correctly, people once used tobacco to cure intestinal parasites. Imagine what a joy that treatment must have been.

During the Spanish flue epidemic of 1917 (or so) my grandfather took care of his inlaws who were all infected with the virus, changing bedpans, bedclothes etc. He kept a big black cigar in his mouth the entire time he was over there and believed that that was why he never got sick.

I believe there were more GIs that died of the Spanish flue in ww1 than from action.....wonder if that is kept separately in our war dead numbers?

4 out of 5 drug dealers surveyed recommend the Toto Aquia Super Flush.

The few times I tried Copenhagen, I got profuse salivation and seriously upset stomach. They can have it.

A definitive human cause for bee keepers misery

Thieves Go For Bees! Californian Beekeepers On AlertBy Dee Chisamera
10:51, March 10th 20080 votes

One year after beekeepers have had to deal with a mysterious disorder among their bee colonies called Colony Collapse Disorder, in which adult honeybees started abandoning the hives and simply disappearing, a new phenomenon, this time not so mysterious, came to light: hive theft.

In an industry that adds billions of dollars to annual crops across the United States, one hit comes after another, as this time beekeepers are dealing with losses of tens of thousands of dollars after entire hives have been stolen.

And it’s no wonder such a phenomenon became a lucrative business for thieves. After the Colony Collapse Disorder started over a year ago, the costs for renting beehives have grown significantly. In the past years and before CCD came to break around 80 percent of the colonies, the price for renting a hive was of approximately $55. As it appears, the stolen hives are rented to farmers, just like legitimate beekeepers do, for prices that have gone up to $200.

Bees are a crucial element in agriculture, as honeybees pollinate approximately 130 crops in the United States and farmers depend on them for better crops. Bee pollination usually adds about $15 billion in crop value annually.

Researchers concluded last year that there were four possible causes for the Colony Collapse Disorder: new or reemerging pathogens, new bee pests or parasites, environmental and/or nutritional stress, or pesticides.

What proved to be a disastrous 2006-2007 season for beekeepers only managed to attract individuals hoping for easy money. It’s no wonder that, at least in California, hive thievery gained proportion in the past months. For the time being, the overall industry has not been affected by them, as their actions are reflected more on an individual level for beekeepers, but you never know where this may lead to.

I wonder if this bee thing dovetails with Mistress's thread about the water supply being contaminated with drugs?

Messing with the hormones would surely mess up the hive social structure.

^^^ That's a good point. For folks interested in the details Google "Endocrine disruptors". The theory is that various man-made chemicals of a certain sort act as hormones ( = endocrine system) in animals (different chemicals act differently on different animals). Some of the chemicals are decomposition products of other chemicals and are thus, difficult to track through the ecosystem. Proof is extremely difficult (as is usually the case for all things ecological) but correlations are compelling. For example, I know of several developmental deformities in herps that were initially believed thought due to chemicals but later, turned out to be pathogenic microorganisms. Others are most probably due to man-made chemicals. Proof of causality in vitro is essentially following Koch's principal and not too difficult but IN THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT is elusive.

Last night there was a special on the Science chanel about an apiarist(sp) who has done a study on bees and found a cause for them leaving and flying off in the wrong direction, it's called the "Isreali paralytic virus." Apparently if bees are sick and know it they will leave the hive so they don't infect other members. The study was done by freezing the bee corpses, disecting them and when viewed under a microscope found damage to the liver and kidneys. Both are filters in the body.

Seriously, I hope this can get worked out before the fruit crops get ruined.

Sorry M, post deleted. I hope so too. I am encouraged as my tomato plants are doing well, despite a brief freeze after fruiting last week!
