Genetic factors are a slippery slope. Evil dogs have blocky heads and most of the people in prison have dark hair and dark eyes. Lock up all of them at birth or economize and euthanize?

Hello from Expresso Love on Martha's Vineyard.
Ahh, how comforting that the teachings of Darwin's cousin Sir Francis Galton are not mouldering upon dryasdust liber shelves....

After all, no less an assortment of "armed intellectuals"such as Hitler,Streicher and Rosenberg have endorsed this, along with the clown prince of satire George Bernard Shaw and no less a pioneer than Maggie Sanger herself!
To wit...

But then if this policy were rigidly adhered to we would not have this...

Well, back to the verandah on Truro for another Highball....Christ,ain't life a *****...

Well I gotta tell you, my son bought Goliath as a puppy 1.5 years ago, without my knowledge. They are illegal to own in Dade county so I gave him a choice, either get rid of the dog or move out. He moved out on his own and has dramatically changed his life for the better.

Goliath is the sweetest thing. He plays with my 16 year old dog, shared his food, never has exhibited one aggressive tendency, other than destroying every ball he sees.

On the other hand, my son went out and got another one, Leonidis, who feels the need to own everything. They go at it from time to time over toys, food, etc...

I don't think Leo is a bad dog, he's just wired differently. At 6 months, he tries to have sex with anything. Goliath does nothing like that.

I sure can't explain it. But I will tell you that I love my pit and have no issues with him playing with kids, once his initial exuberance goes away after meeting them.

I know I said mine. The 2 were fighting enough that I told my son he was going to come home to a bloody house and told him to give me Goliath and try and sell the other one. That's not gonna happen, so I am "stuck" with a brindle pit.

While I know they are illegal in Dade county, I keep him in the yard most of the time and plan on registering him as a staffordshire terrier in case anyone comes snooping around. Lot's of people, cops included, do it.

As for Vick, he is an ahole who deserved what he got. I read an article that claimed he and his cronies would put the pits in a fighting cage. The ones that fought, and showed aggression, were treated great. The ones that WOULD NOT FIGHT were the ones that were tortured, abused, killed, etc....

As part of his plea deal, he was to provide alomost 1 million dollars to care for, rehabilitate, house and in the cases where there was no hope for rehabilitation, euthanize the dogs found on his property.

Most of the dogs that were found had either been tortured, exposed to fighting and were traumatized. The organization that handled them has managed to rehabilitate most of them for adoption to loving families, all of which had experiences with Pits before, and knowing their past, STILL adopted them.

While all breeds have certain dogs that are born ornery, like humans, I have grown to understand that in most cases, it all depends on how they are bred, and more importantly, raised.

Howdy Swamp Yankee,
Spuds was a Bull Terrier (the clown prince of the terriers). The dog used in Target's adds is a Bull Terrier also.

X 2.

If owners understand that they are legally liable, and homeowners' insurance rates vary based upon dog breed, whether the property has sufficient fences, warnings protections etc to prevent attacks against non-trespassers, then the dog owners will pay attention, because it costs them money and or jail time, plus the potential death of their doggy.

It's called: be responsible for real, or pay the price.

But then, if you own a handgun, in my opinion, you should have gone through a city/county/state-sponsored course explaining that you understand your responsibilities regarding, use, transport, discharge, and securing same. And you sign a paper saying you understand your responsibilities. Then you pay the price if it's your fault. No whining.

Ditto if you own a dog, a goat, a hippo, a cheetah, a velociraptor, whatever.

I agree with you, but the sad thing is, most of the people whose pits maul others (I am NOT talking about most people who own pits, by any means! ... just the ones who turn their dogs into violent animals) are the kind of people who have no idea what responsibility is. And even sadder, most of them don't really care that much if the dog ends up dead. They have the dog as a status symbol or to "protect" them. I think the pit bull breed's biggest problem is this: It happens to be very popular with the type of people who shouldn't own animals, any animals. Any breed that is popular with @$$holes is going to end up with a high attack rate. Yeah, when you read report after report, maybe you start to wonder. But anyone who's met a number of pit bulls would have to conclude that it isn't the breed that's the problem ... every pit bull I have ever met has been gentle and sweet, more so than most dogs. To be honest I grew up thinking all pit bulls were awful (that's what my mom always said) ... but meeting several of them changed my tune completely. So it's especially reprehensible that people manage to turn members of this very sweet breed into violent animals. It is unlucky for pit bulls that that element of society happens to like them. I guess the fortunate part is that there are an awful lot of good, responsible people who enjoy them and appreciate them ... and in some cases, give them a second chance. As said, every pit I've personally ever met falls into the latter category.

Just my 2 cents ... one thing that I find particularly depressing is that in cases of aggressive dogs, pit bulls or other, the dogs always end up paying for it. Not only in death, but through their whole life ... no animal should have to be raised in and live in a hateful environment. The owners rarely pay much more than a fine, maybe a little jail time in extreme cases. Why should the owners get so many chances when the dogs don't even get a second chance (or a first chance, really, for that matter)?

Not all of them turn their dogs into violent animals, some dogs are just naturally aggressive towards other dogs or humans. And a pitbull can be quite a vicious attacker.

I bet it is mostly just people who don't know how what to do with their aggressive animal.

This is our second Akita. We've also owned a Chow-chow.

If the People's Republic of California tried to take either of my dogs away, based on stupid and baseless assumptions regarding breed behavior, there would be rioting on the streets.
I have a friend, and his chow is mean to him,

I know plenty of people who own gentle pit bulls who aren't specialized animal handlers ... the dogs were never aggressive a day in their lives. Most dogs that are extremely aggressive are that way because they've been treated like crap. Not necessarily trained to be violent, but ignored, yelled at, hit and/or just generally not handled and loved. I'm not saying this is always the case ... but it's very often the case. Heck, the same could be said of violent people.

Yes, pit bulls are heavy, powerful animals that are capable of being extremely dangerous and deadly. So are horses ... times 10. A horse, no matter how nice and sweet, can kill you any day of the week, even by complete accident. Yet culturally horses are considered majestic and cherishable while pit bulls are dangerous killing machines? I'm not a huge pit fan and personally I would not choose to own one (I prefer, as my cousin put it "little gay dogs") ... but it's absurd to label them as a "problem" breed and even worse to ban them.

All i'm saying is the owners aren't necessarily training them to be mean...and I wouldn't want to be attacked by a pit. All it takes is one incident to cause behavior problems in a dog. For example one of my dachshunds was attacked by a Golden Retriever, quite a vicious one that a neighbor kept unleashed in his front yard. Moron. Now the dachshund is aggressive towards all yellow furred dogs and especially wary of unleashed dogs. If you have more than one dog, that problematic dog's problems will be learned by the other, normal dogs. Then the owner says WTF, gives up and dumps them at an animal shelter, and the cycle continues.

Horses are ridiculously dangerous. Weighing in at at least 1,000lbs with a top speed at least 25-ish and four steel-tipped hooves.....
