Anyone shave with one of these?

http://www.amazon.com/Merkur-Classic-Barber-Safety-Germany/dp/B000RJUZMW/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1202792821&sr=1-4

The electric razors are expensive and seem to bother my skin pretty quickly. The cheap throw aways are good for like 1-2 uses before my neck gets really red. Mac's 3's are expensive, but so is this Merkur.

Are they any good or am I just going to turn my face into a bloody mess? I once went to an old school barbor who used one and it was a pretty awsome shave.

My Gillete razor is about 40 years old and gives great shaves if you have clear skin. I stopped using it because good blades were not easy to find. I may buy a pack of Merkur blades and switch back.

I got a remington electric shaver at Target for 30 bux. I made the mistake of letting my beard grow for about 5 days before i used it for the first time. Hurt like hell! Just yanked out all the hair. My neck was red for a couple days.

But I soon learned to just shave with it every day...it's a very comfortable shave and after about a week or two your skin gets used to it and you'll stop getting irritated.

It is totally different than disposable razors, since those just take off a fine layer of skin. The electric ones take off no skin, just cut the hair off the existing skin so it'll take a while for your skin to get used to being rubbed against and agitated. I don't break out anymore after shaving though, which is a plus, also the shave is a lot closer. No more messy shaving cream and burning aftershave.

I use a rechargeable Remington foil shaver -- the foil is the thin piece of metal with the small holes in it that the hairs poke through so that the razor sharp undulating blade can slice them off. The thinner the foil, the closer the shave.

The damn foil will wear a hole in it after a few months, replacement is about $13, if you can find the foil separate. Usually you get it with a new blade and it costs about $22.

Funny thing, I can buy the entire shaver on e-bay now for about that much, including shipping. With the new blade and foil in place. This is the best way to go of course, because the nifty little trimmer pop up thingy will get dull eventually and you can't get a new blade for that. The pop up is like a mini hair shear and it's great for getting the hairs that get too long for the foil thingy to get hold of.

The rechargeable part is useful cuz I shave while I commute. Safer than driving while using a cell phone; you can tell by the sound it makes if you're still cutting hair. When I come to a stop, I put in a minute or two with the mirror, and I'm done. Time is money.

Smartest thing I've done recently was to buy an old Gillette adjustable razor on eBay. After a couple of weeks of practice, it gives a much better shave than any of the new razors.

Looks like the Merkur will do the same job. Don't expect to be nick-free the first few times.

I like the shave a good blade can give and I use one now and then if I've got something special coming up or there are too many long, orphan hairs to chop of with the pop up thingy on my electric.

For some reason, my skin won't take it if I do it every day or two. I get a rash of little zits. Oh well. The electric is easier on me. With some people, it's reversed. Go figure.

That's great! It's the kind of razor I started shaving with, when I was kid ... I didn't really have to shave, but I thought it was sooo cool!

However, back then my skin couldn't really take the shaving action until way into my twens. All kinds of irritations. I did blame it on the razor/shaver.
Growing a beard didn't help either, it just got worse under the hair.

Later, I found the disposable Gillette's pretty comfy, but it's true they loose their edge quickly and cheap skid as I am, I use them way too long.

Just today, I had a 3 day beard removed with an old dual blade Gillette. It still hurts ...

Those look great! I think I'll get one of those.
Do they come with replacement blades? Or can you get blades for it separately?

Ps. You need to practice with the adjustment, it will change the angle of the blade. If you open it up too far, you'll cut yourself and those cuts are usually deeper then with disposables that have a fixed angle.
As long as you keep the adjustment snug or thight you should be fine.

Solingen steel, works best. Tried out all those fancy Mach 3 triple blades etc. None comes close to this.

When I am too lazy, I use the Panasonic wet and dry electric shaver. After trying out Braun and Norelco, I find this to be the best.

HMMMM. I just use a disposable because I can't really grow anything. It's kinda embarrasing when a 13 year old can have a better beard than me.

You and me both. I've never tried the Rolls. But this Valet AutoStrop was my Grandads. Worked for him - works for me. A few flip-flops on the stap and away we go. Works great.

Braun Syncro

I use a Braun electric shaver and am very satisfied. The foils last a long time - typically 1+ years. I never got more than 6 months out of my Remington before the foils needed replacing.

This one has a "cleaning station" that rinses the head in some alcohol based stuff - good cleaning job + sanitary. I've had far less razor-attributable rashes using that cleaner.

The manual suggests you clean it every day - bah, I say. Every Friday after shaving - that has been good enough, and the cleaning solution lasts for several months that way.

When I was first shaving, I had a real problem with irritation on my neck. Remington makes a powder stick that has the properties of baby powder, without the "cutsie" smell. Rub that on your neck and face and the shaver glides smoothly with little or no irritation.

As others have indicated, most people eventually get used to the friction of an electric razor. I know I did.

I do shave with a blade (Atra or something similar) about once a week - usually on Sunday night in the shower to trim off 2 days worth of growth over the weekend. With the blade, I don't need to shave again until Tuesday morning. With the electric razor, I have to shave in the evening if I'm going out and need to look presentable.

I might try that. I hate it when the damn foil develops a hole. All of a sudden, you're putting tiny little cuts all over your face. I usually put some elec. tape on the hole until I can get a new foil.

I just bought another new, in package, Remington DA 307 on E-bay for $14, $9 shipping; about what the replacement blade and foil cost by themselves. I've got 4 now. I've suggested to Costco that they carry the replacement blades but no luck. Probably wouldn't cost that much less anyway.
