Drill ANWAR?
Why isn't ANWR an issue anymore? I haven't heard or seen mention of it for ages, which seems odd since oil is getting so spendy. Has the cost of oil (and OPEC's apparent disinterest in increasing production) changed anyone's mind about ANWR?

It's about perception.

perception ?
Are there bigger stories on the newswire ? gas price news stories themselves seem to be all over the place Why hasn't someone other than the normal oil pundits (whomever they are) mentioned ANWAR again ? Or is it not a viable alternative ? (too long a lead time, wouldnt help prices enough, the green lobby got that place locked down forever...) (I realize that what we/I am asking is: "why don't news outlets cover what I think they should be" ...and thats probably the beginning of the answer =) -John

It is about perception for this reason: When the majority of people think about oil in the arctic, what image do they see in their minds? Is it a dime cheaper gas at the pump or an oil-covered baby otter on a cobble beach in Valdes Alaska?

A friend of mine just moved from Texas to Florida. In Texas he worked for a company that drills for oil. He said they are drilling for oil big time, he was around the Houston area.

The whole Gulf of Mexico & most Gulf states --except FL. Cuba and China are handling the drilling off Florida. That should be reassuring to the Floridians who oppose American-sanctioned companies overseen by the US gov. Great job, Florida!

High oil prices should solve all of our environmental ills since it forces people to cut down on their driving and consumption. It should be celebrated.

So it solves the environmental problem (lets pretend), will it cause other problems in it's wake? Only a moron would think that a fix or attempted fix at one end will only bring good.

Would drilling in ANWR reduce the price of oil? My guess is that the output from that field would be insufficient to affect the worldwide oil market.
To me, drilling in ANWR would do little other than help deplete our oil reserves. I have never understood why that would be in our national interest. |

If it is an oil reserve, you are going to have to drill it sooner or later otherwise, it is meaningless. What are you keeping it for? For a more dire time than now?

Yes. I would rather use up everyone else's reserves.

The same politicians lamenting and opposing any new domestic drilling or refining are the same ones whining about high gas prices and our dependence on foreign oil.

Read this:
Study: ANWR oil would have little impact http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4542853/ As long as people are driving 15 mpg guzzlers to the office and grocery store, I don't want to see any additional domestic drilling. First let gas prices rise to the point where enough people have changed their habits. ![]()
