I've never had any issues with cops, especially when I was a dumb kid pushing my luck. Open exhaust/headers, smoke shows, running a race car on the street, speeding, etc. Yes, I often got tickets and deservedly so. But I was taught to be respectful so even if the cops weren't pleased with me they were respectful in return. I just don't see where being a ***** to a cop is ever going to work in one's favor.

The latest installment was when I got pulled over the other day for not having an inspection sticker. Mind you in NJ when you have a QQ historic plates, there is no inspection stickers but this cop never got that lesson or he was playing dumb. Anyway I told him that there is no inspection sticker for QQ plates. He did not accept my explanation. He proceeded to hold me for 10 minutes to run my license etc. I was inconvenienced for his edification and he never apologized.

My first car...'63 Chevy Impala SS, lake-pipes, no mufflers, 327, 3-spd Hurst Shifter, coming off the Winneconne Bridge over the Wolf River...2 little brothers and 1 little sister...all standing in the back seat...

(BTW: Paint color on this beeotch...Candy Apple Green...well before DayGlow).

Bubble-gumballs come on...I pull over within 50' of the first site of his lights...Officer Hose (yep, that was his name) comes up to my window...but I notice he has his hand on his revolver...

HOSE: "Mark? Who's all in the car with you?"
ME: "My brothers and sister."
HOSE: "Anyone else in the car? (He shines the light inside...scanning the floorboards and back seat floor.) Anything in the trunk I should be looking at?"
ME: "HUH?"

(There's a slight pause and I hear Hose talking to someone off to my right, but blocked from sight due to the roof pillar...turns out it's the Omro cop, pistol pulled and cocked and aimed at the car.)

Hose comes back to my window with the "Pink Slip" for the lakes...5 days to fix or park it.

I get home and the while I'm getting the bros&sis out of the back seat, the neighbor lady (Our version of Mrs. Kravits) comes screamin' from her place about how we were all about to be massacred (she lived with the Police Scanner nailed to the side of her head) and ended up scaring the little ones to tears and freaking out my mother who had no idea (neither did I) that when I got pulled over...it wasn't so much the lakers that caused the issue than it was the fact that the whole damn county of LEOs were looking for "A GREEN CHEVY 2-DOOR, DRIVER CONSIDERED ARMED & DANGEROUS" that was wanted for armed-robbery in a nearby community of Berlin, WI..

Little did I realize that there were 4 other cop cars (unmarked, but well armed) in front of me during the pull-over and in each car, at least, they had one officer in it that had some dear-rifle cross-hairs aimed at my pumkin.

Thank dog I never gave Hose a reason to blink or sneeze.

I'm feeling much better and older now...thank you.

The same happened to me. I was driving a customers classic Bentley and the NJ state cop acted like I ran over his dog when he finally caught up to me. No wonder they have a reputation as gestapo.

Dave- cops are civilians too. The only citizens who are not civilians are those who are on active Military duty. As a Veteran I always find it odd that a public servant would call their employers "civilians" as if they were a different class of people. I'm not referring to you personally, as from your postings you seem like an "old school" cop, but a lot of the newbies don't seem to understand that they are civilians like the rest of us. I find it scary when policemen don't realize that they are not part of a Military organization, yet think they can act as if they are.

10fords, I see your point and I do realize that I, much to my sadness, am a civilian just like the rest of you. But most police departments treat their officers like it was a military organization. We had to march into roll call, stand at attention for inspection, and live by rules that you would only find in the military. We could get "company punishment" or a "trial board', just like in the UCMJ. I went into the army in 1965 and joined the police department upon my discharge in 1967 and worked until 1998. Joining the civilian world was very difficult for me, Hell, I had to start paying for coffee and donuts!

I have a very difficult time with present day law enforcement. There are many, many good, honest and caring cops out there but there are also a lot of power hungry bozos too. I fault police departments around the country for lowering standards to attract certain groups of people to the job. Police bosses want to please the politicians that appoint them rather than serve the public.

That being said, I also fault society in general. People think "freedom" means being able to act the fool whenever they want to without any repercussions. I fault our insatiable appetite for alcohol and drugs for much of what goes on in society.

It was still a fun job, though. They gave me clothes, a gun and a Harley Davidson and said "go get 'em!" What's not to like????

Thank you for this insight, I feel that you are sincere in that you are able to voice the positive as well as the negative.
As a side-bar> I have a very good relationship with a senior detective here in Singapore-who deals in Immigration issues-human trafficking etc. Their testimony has sent 5 drug smugglers to the gallows during their career.
So,we are talking 'seasoned vet'.
During one of our visits to the states, I was asked to show this person a major city in the states. We went to Detroit. I did not take them to see the gritty ripped back side of the city. Only the tourist spots.
Within 10 minutes-this detective asked me to please get them out of the area A.S.A.P- becuase they did not feel safe.
I am glad that you made it thruogh your career, and came out intact.

Jerry

Dave- agree with all of the above. Wish there were more cops like you out there. Thanks for your service, both Military, and civilian. If we ever meet I'll buy you a 12 pack (of donuts!)

Within the organization, the police use military titles, i.e. "lieutenant", "captain", etc. In addition, police cars are sometimes referred to as "cruisers", a maritime term used to refer to a type of war ship. They are called "POLice" because they are "POLicy enforcers" who enforce "public policy" as dictated by "policy makers" known as "legislators".

Policy makers are known to change their minds mid stream which means that "Public Policy" is in a constant state of flux or change. Don't like today's "policies"? Don't worry, tomorrow the "policy makers" will change their minds.......again.
