This is where I believe the most good could be done. The justice system has nothing to do with right/wrong, it addresses legal/illegal. I heard a quote somewhere that approximately said "the opposite of poverty is justice".

The victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings each had between three and 11 wounds, Chief State Medical Examiner H. Wayne Carver III said Saturday afternoon.
20 kids, 6 adults x 3-11 bullets EACH. That's a crapload of shots fired since there were probably some missed ones.

Warren v. District of Columbia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

If you are in the city of Detroit, don't bother calling 911.
The Detroit police recommend getting a gun, and be prepared to use it.
They will not respond for HOURS, if at all.
The average shift is 100 officers to cover all of Detroit, including precinct administration.
The street thugs are more heavily armed than the SWAT team.
When they respond:
* If the thug is dead, it is declared self defense.
* If you or a family member are wounded or dead, they take a report, and explain: the PERP if apprehended may go to trial eventually and get 3 - 5 years in jail, be paroled/released, come back and KILL you for another 1.5 years in jail.

The Detroit police will NOT respond to:
* Alarms going off.
* Assault.
* Domestic disputes.
* Arson
* Burglary
* Robbery
* Theft
* Vandalism

Detroit's high crime rate is spurring 40 percent of the city's remaining residents to plan on moving out within the next five years.

.
Cops tend to look at crime as "good for business". In other words, there would be absolutely no need for cops if crimes were not being committed. Job security.

I, as well as many on this board, grew up in homes with firearms that were never locked up in a safe, nor did they have trigger locks on them. Growing up, my dad always had a 1911, loaded with one in the chamber, sitting in the nook of his headboard. Under his bed, there was a shotgun, again fully loaded, as well as an M1 carbine, again fully loaded. Mom always had her .22 pistol loaded and in the nightstand. I didn't grow up and become a serial killer or a mass murderer. My friends were raised in homes with guns in pretty much the same way...and none of them became serial killers or mass murderers.

We were taught at a very young age to treat all weapons as if they were loaded. We were taught how to check to see if the safety was on, as well as how to properly handle the weapon. We learned at a young age that they are deadly, and not toys. I was 6 years old the first time I got to shoot my dad's M1, 8 when I was given my first .22 rifle, 10 when I was given a shotgun, and 18 when dad gave me my first .38. *GASP* Oh, the horror...how did this young man ever survive his childhood??

Someone, please tell me...How can this be? Why is it that we can have generations of people grow up around guns, and have them all their lives, yet they don't go out and become mass murderers??

Today's youth don't understand consequences anymore. They don't understand that if you don't follow the rules, that you'll be punished. Why is that?? Because years ago, the courts stepped in and started telling parents that they weren't allowed to bust their kids on the ass for breaking the rules. If you did, the child could call the cops, and you'd be hauled off in handcuffs. We, as a society, are now afraid to punish our kids. We're afraid to do much more than tell little Johnny no and put him in time out.

Sorry folks, but a bit more kids getting their rumps beat for breaking the rules at a younger age would teach them about consequences. It worked for the generations prior to mine...it will work for today's generation too.

I cry for the children.

One deranged animal did this.
Fortunately it is dead, and will never again destroy.

Exactly how did us bleeding hearts take the teeth out of the legal system? Is this the same type of bleeding heart judge who told a woman she did not resent the rape though and said the crime was only worth 6 years?

That number (roughly 3/4) refers to the number of weapons used in US mass murders that were obtained legally.

And how do you propose to change this? Any ideas?

Others are calling for more gun control. You will need more than anecdotes to dissuade them.
If we cannot change society, then society will dictate change to us.
I suggest a reasonable discussion about controlling weapons and the hue and cry about gun grabbers is deafening... What other options can you offer? What will you put on the table? Do you not realize that right now is when the fight to keep your weapons is happening, and refusing to even discuss the options removes your voice from the debate. A debate which will be lost by the gun owners if they do not begin to see reality and seek compromise.
The inflexible, unwilling to discuss options gun owners are the ones who will eventually cause society to take their weapons.
Don't say you weren't warned.

"Of the world's 23 "rich" countries, the U.S. gun-related murder rate is almost 20 times that of the other 22. With almost one privately owned firearm per person, America's ownership rate is the highest in the world; tribal-conflict-torn Yemen is ranked second, with a rate about half of America's. " America needs to have a open public discourse on gun violence...
