Recently, Michael Savage, the radio personality, was discussing the war in Iraq on his radio show. A listener from New England phoned in and said that New Englanders were praying for the American soldiers in Iraq. When it comes to New Englanders, he replied, He guaranteed that absolutely NO prayers were being offered up, none, zilch, nada.

Here in the South, the words "Please, "Thank You", "May I?", "Yes Sir", "No Sir" "Yes Ma'am" "No Ma'am", "pass the biscuits, please" are heard often. Most gentlemen still open the door for a lady and seat their women first at the dinner table. When we deal with Yankees, OTH, we rarely, if ever, hear "Please, "Thank You", "May I?" "Yes Sir". Pretty much a total lack of civility, decorum, manners and etiquette are present. Whenever I call a company for customer service and the call is taken by a representative located in Yankee land, I know that most likely I'm in for a hard time. There have been cases where they actually hung up (and still hang up) on customers.

It has been said one reason the South lost the war is because they were unwilling to hit below the belt. The North, by contrast, as seen by the tactics of one William Tecumseh Sherman, had NO problem in hitting below the belt.

Sherman's 'total war' philosophy was seen after the war when a literal battle broke out between the Chicago and New York gangs/mafia and the Ku Klux Klan. If you take the time to read any accounts of it, the Chicago/New York crew went down South and showed the Klan what REAL violence is all about. You'll have to do your own research to find out WHO ordered them to go do it and more importantly, WHY they were ordered to go do it.

Mean spirited? Mean hearted? Just plain yankee mean and cruel? I don't know but the evidence seems to indicate this is their doctrine.......

About the only Southern Talking Point you left out was "the war of yankee agression".
I am a Marylander, but i have no patience for rude behavior. Rude manners are an indication of a lack of proper training as a child. OTOH some pretty cutting remarks can be hurtful even if covered eith southern honey and charm.
Sherman's tactics may have been far humane by forcing an end to the war than gentler means allowing the war to drag on.
Before you get too proud of the chivary, there were many accounts of less than good behavior by some fighting for the South. War is indeed hell regardless of the side.

Savage is a moron and a rabble rouser. War is not nice. Period. There could plenty of ink spilt about cruelty in the south in that day.

BTW, spare me the super-sized remarks.

How very smug and superior of you. Other than that, your response added nothing to the discussion.

Southern hospitality and gentility. It is real, and quite wondeful.

I long for that sort of civility, gentility and kindness also, and find it sorely absent everywhere today. (ESPECIALLY in generations younger than mine. My parents were like that, so civil, gentle, polite, gracious and refined, - especially to each other - and people loved them for it. And it served them well - as in their 64 years of a happy loving marriage too!

I do try to emulate it as much as I can, and my girlfriend and I treat each other that way and it is highly mutually rewarding.

~~~~But to the rest of that, I am astonished that some Southerners still are fighting the Civil war, today, though. 1865 was a longtime ago,and that was when overt hostility ceased.
It brings to mind the retort of non-Southerners I have heard once in a while when those kind of remarks pop up now and again:
"Okay.
LET THEM GO."
Much of it depends upon the parents, however the geographic area they were raised in also plays into it. For a Southerner, "please" and "thank you" goes a long long ways in dealing with people. If a Southerner goes out of their way to make a business transaction better for you, it is easy to reply with a "thank you for taking the time to attend to the details, I REALLY do appreciate it!!!".
In some cases, million dollar deals were lost simply because the other party chose not to reply with a simple "thank you". Their mothers forgot to teach them manners 101 and it is now costing them in day to day business dealings.....
much of the issue has to do with one's vantage point. Not raised or grew up in the South? Then there is a good chance one will not understand their pain and anguish. And, by the South, I'm not talking about the Yankee'ed up Atlantic coastal cities or big land locked cities like Atlanta. Yankees have moved into those areas and brought their yankee ways with them.
I'm talking rural Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi. Back roads and small towns where you will still see the Confederate Stars and Bars flying on a flag pole in the front yard of their homes. Take I40 through Nashville, Tennessee and you will see a very very large Confederate Stars and Bars flag (I'm talking the size of a friggin' BILL BOARD) flying for all to see right off of I-40. And, they don't give a rats rip if anyone likes it or doesn't like it. It's in the ground water, that's just the way it is......
Cary, North Carolina (Containment Area for Relocated Yankees)
It left the south a generation ago. Now the kids are the same as anywhere, and more so.
