I swapped the side plates.
Interesting- that could be very useful information.....
Are the shifters all the same?

I believe the shifters are the same.

The only other difference I have found in the tranny swaps is there is an "alignment" pin on the upper part of the aluminum adapter plate on some (cant remember which, I believe the later ones), but thats easily solved by swapping adapters or pulling the pin.

There's no length difference, the crossmember bolts the same, the exhaust bracket bolts the same. Right?

You have to love a company that makes something well...then as they do change things they keep interchangability , backwards compatibility, etc as high as they are able...
When was the last time you saw that amongst present day companies ?

Gravely Two Wheeled Walking Tractors have a lot of that spirit.. in the old ones...

Your right to the extent I hate to work on any other car now, The 240Ds have my spoiled

On that 'plate swap" I took the side plate off the broken tranny, nothing to lose, OK , that was easy so I took the side plate off the replacement tranny and both looked the same inside so I swapped them, that was on a friends car a couple years ago.

Transmission

I think the transmission in question has no side plates ...just the three holes in the side of the case.....later model 4 speed it looks like....

Yellit is right, there is no side plate on the 716.210 tranny.

The swap I did was between two early style trannys (2 piece) on one the center shift arm is vertical like the other two (in nut) on the other the center arm is forward about 20 degrees (in nut). The center shift rod for the replacement tranny is what I needed but swapping side plates solved my problem. Sorry about the confusion.

My pop suggested I could have a machine shop drill through the flange and the output shaft and put a big, tough bolt through to keep 'em moving together. Could this work? I'm not really interested for myself, too bootleg, but maybe for selling the transmission?

I took those pics 2 years ago when I dismantled the 716.210 manuel tranny on the 1983 240D. I thought it could be helpfull to some people...

Two pics of the tranny on the car, and also two pics where we can see the 3 holes for the shifters.

Also, a "funny" picture of the drain hole before the rebuilt. We can see the broken synchro brass ring...

Damaged Tranny shaft

Looks very tight between transmission shaft output seal and backside of Tri-flange.....

Don't know if a drilled hole with bolt and nut could fit in there without hitting the transmission seal/housing.....

Surely there must be a dead 4 speed with a good output shaft someone on the forum could part with.....

In case anyone hasn't looked at this thread yet: does anyone have or know about a standard transmission for a w123 in or near Boston? I'll drive as far as 50 miles from Concord.

Does anyone have a good idea to repair the splines on the shaft? Is there an economical way to do this for either keeping as a spare transmission or selling? Some say hard chrome plating isn't strong enough, but neither is welding.

output shaft

Moser engineering re-splines shafts that have been built up by (spray-welding).....

They do not do (spray-welding) but respline after they recieve one that has been built up....
