Why are you worried about me?
The point is clear: trying to dissuade somebody from ricing up their classic German automobile.
We give opinions here. Having a different one should not be considered rude providing it isn't delivered rudely.
Just be glad it wasn't another bat......

Bat?!? WTF are you talking about?

And why do you care what he (or I) do to our cars?

Personally, I couldn't give a flying flip less about other people's opinion regarding what I do to my car. If I (or the OP) cared (or "worried") about other's opinions on A-pillar pods we'd ask. Or at least I would.

Not trying to be rude or unfriendly to you specifically JimmyL, but I think I've said my piece about unsolicited NEGATIVE opinions. They're generally about as welcome as unsolicited advice. And I have to admit I have noticed that you are generally one of the first to offer an unsolicited negative opinon...

As I very patiently explained, I (and I believe the OP), have considered the other options. Your opinion - which I perceive as having been negatively (and yes, rudely) expressed - isn't going to change anything about the other options and therefore isn't going to change my mind or that of anyone else who's thought it through and decided the A-pillar is the preferred option - and I think you know that as well as anyone.

That being the case, then what really IS the point? Padding your post count?

And BTW, any car newer than 1979 is not technically a classic. Every classic car club I've ever known of says you gotta' hit the 30 year mark to qualify for that distinction.

Yeah, sorry to come across like someone peed in my Cherios, it just seems to me like we'd have a lot less conflict around here if everybody wasn't so quick to "go negative" in every thread that comes along...

i have 4 gauges. onve is a volt meter to measure the voltage obviously and its down by ur knee kinda like where the black part of the dash meets the tan part of the kneepanel, u can view it thru the side of the steering wheel when driving its nice. iv done no drilling, and the install looks real clean no wires showing. then i have a boost gauge in a single autometer gauge holder in the center of the dash, paralell with the center console because i turned up the boost it looks nice. i have the wires going to the windshield wrapped in that ribbed plastic tubing for covering up loose wires, then routed unseen to under the dash and so on after that. looks pretty nice. i also have a pyrometer thats not installed yet and an oil pressure gauge (not installed) so i can see where the oil psi actually maxes out at, since the one on the instrument panel maxes out right after u touch the gas pretty much . i could install them all on an autometer 3 gauge holder, but then u would have a thick loom with wires in it running toward the windshield. if i used an a piller pod i could run the wires without being seen. I dont think it has anything to do with "rice". diesel trucks have it. tdi's have them. y cant we have them? i m going to school at uti for auto diesel, so id like to tweek this car a little as i have with every other vehicle iv owned. i want my motor running tip top and i love to monitor what is going on. it would be nice to also have a stoichiometer to monitor a/f... it would help u drive with the ideal fuel ratio and u can keep it in that range to get the best possible gas mileage, or make sure you motor isnt ever running lean. i dunno i really like these old mercedes alot but they are slow and i want to make it faster, as much as i can once i get well educated about this motor, but even for what i got going now including turning up the full load which i havnt done yet but will be real soon. i think its somthing to be proud of if u can make a car like this fast. even fast enough to screw around at the drag strip somtimes is my goal honestly no matter how long it takes me. but i want it to look as stock as possible even on the outside... even painted hubcaps i want like im trying to find, i have cokebottle style wheels but i like the painted hubcaps the add character to this car. but im 26 years and been into cars my whole life and in the industry for 11 years so this is the stuff im into doing. i think extra gauges look fine on these cars. im not just doing it tho because i want gauges but i need them. im planning on repainting my car after i finish the bodywork and trying to get it nice enough shape to 4 the local carshow. after i get my exhaust ceramic coated and the hot side of the turbo done, have a 115 intake manifold and my saab intercooler mounted under the hood with a fan on and it, a nice clean engine bay with all my mods lookn good and done right i think my pillar pod will then look just fine

Wow, that is a very large paragraph. Much larger than the gauge cluster on my previously owned Dodge CTD.

Your center vents probably don't get much use-I put my boost & exhaust pressure in there using a painted PVC spacer to make the gauge wide enough to fill the vent trim ring. It's in a plain line of sight, and is cheap.

Down here we would burst into flames during the day driving down the road without the center vents........

NAH, I still want to go the pillar pod route.

In the thumbnail below you can see my Wood is already gone in the area where I would put the Gauges. You can also see a slot where the wires could pass through.
I was not thinking of Drilling holes; I was thinking of getting a nice piece of hard Wood and Hole Sawing the holes in the Wood for the Gauges and mounting the Wood with 2 screws through that spot.
The Wood could be glued together to make it thicker and stained and contoured to make it look nice.
I think there is room for four 2 inch gauges.

Yeah, that looks great, BUT, my ceter vents are on almost constantly. I can't STAND stale air in a car, so my climate control fan is on almost all the time and I like a breeze blowing in my face. Giving up the vents isn't an option...

I would not cover the Vents either. Where the Wood strip goes is somewhere between 1/12 and 2 inches. 2 inch gauges should not extend high enough to block the Vents.
As long as it takes me to do anything I won't be able actually shaw any thing for about a year are so I cannot show any sort of pic.

What about using 1" gages? You could still use a nicely finished piece of wood as trim, but if you only put 1" holes in the dash, the original piece of wood trim could still be reinstalled later if you wanted and would cover the holes. I know I have seen 1" gages maybe from JC Whitney or Summit, I cant remember which. Just an idea...

I actually wouldn't mind doing this to my W210. I know, it's popular with the neon and boom car crowd, but I don't car what fads they follow and they don't influence my decisions one way or the other. It would have to be off-white to match the rest of the upper part of the interior.

I'd like to put a voltmeter in there. Also handy would be a AC high-pressure gauge; I believe that I could tap into the signal coming from the dryer and scale it with a small electronic circuit. Exhaust temperature is another possibility, but without a turbocharger, it's much less of an issue (right?).

No chance of doing such a thing on our Jetta. In an accident, the airbag would launch it into your face.
