Bus,
since you have no multimeter, try this... Turn on your headlights, try to start it, do the headlights dim a little when you turn the key? if so, then juice is flowing. Next, with the shifter on Park, try to push the actual shifter "forward" then crank. OR try to pull it back just a bit then crank. If the car cranks then it might be your park-neutral safety switch. Try to get a multimeter, they cost just $2 at Harbor Freight and will save you tons of head scratching

Yes. The starter should function. If it doesn't work when jumping the wires, I doubt jumping at the solenoid would do anything.

the pnp switch is like a gatekeeper to make sure you have the car in park or neutral before allowing the starter to engage. it has nothing to do with the car's transmission. i like the way you think though

It's not enough that the lights and radio go on... try giving it a jump start. If it works, there you go, it's the battery. A multimeter would be a good and cheap idea. They go for like $15 and you can test your battery and all of your electrical system. It's better than getting a new starter and then find out yours was perfectly fine...

If the battery were low, you would typically hear a 'click'.

For the last 2years ( under my 22 yr old son's watchful eye ) the transmission has been shifting fine.. but hard to shift and laying "off" center from the gear knob shifter....somehow I still think this pnp switch may be guilty party... Can you describe location and how again to diagnose this ? Thanks, AA

try starting the car with the shifter in slightly "off" position. push hard on the shifter or pull it back slightly from the P or N position. if it starts, then you have your culprit.
honestly, i have not changed one in a MB before, I've done it multiple times on Volvos. Sorry man, someone here will chime in on the PNP.

If it starts when you jump the terminals, the problem is either in the ignition circuit or the neutral safety switch. Make sure it's not in gear when you jump the terminals.

It is the 1st & the 4th ....Don't ask why but I just got around to doing this... and yes the car did start (stalled out bcs not run in a month and it's a diesel that needs acceleration to get warmed up.) but yes this rules out a bad ignition circuit or a bad neutral safety switch. So I'm assuming now a need a new (reman) starter.... Any suggestions for next move? Thanks Austin

If the car's starter jumped to life when you did the solenoid trick, i would say its a starter solenoid for sure. Not sure if Mercedes starters have removable solenoids or not. If so, this will be an easy fix.
If the starter/solenoid are all one unit and must be replaced as such then i'd see if you have a shop locally that can rebuild the starter for you. Diesel starters are quite powerful as they have to push the crank and rotating mass as well as fight extremely high compression. Which means they'll probably cost more to replace/rebuild (rebuild being the cheaper of the two)

GP;
Ok..thanks...maybe thats the next move. After a few jolts with wire jumping the starter I did start to smell a little nasty burning odor..so thats when I quit. But I'm hoping when time comes to take the car in this will start up again and like a good diesel keep running until I decide to shut her off. AA ..
