W124 Wagon dome light flashing

I find that if I glow the car much longer after the glow plug light goes out, my dome light begins to flash. I've heard that this happens to others as well. Some reporting that it occurs while glowing with the door open.

I thought it might be a clever warning that I've left the key on but haven't started the car, but I don't remember reading anything about it in the owners manual.

Anyone else experience this? Any clever theories as to why such a thing is happening? Thanks,
