I have a 1982 380sl, the donor car is a 1990 300d.Any thoughts on a possible match for replacement of the gas burner for the diesel?

Big problems....the 603 and 606 engines are an order of magnitude more difficult to swap. Here's a thread with some good info to give you some guidance and perspective - Not "another" diesel 107!!

If your 1990 300D is a 2.5 (602), then you are looking at a much easier conversion than the next to impossible 603/606.

I don't know a ton about the r107 (that would be mach4's area of expertise), but I've learned a lot about moving the om602 (which your 1990 300D should be). I've been (very slowly) transplanting my 1993 300D 2.5 om602 into my 1991 r129 300SL.

First things I would check are physical space/fit of the motor into the engine compartment, and tranny housing and mounts (easier if you transplant the tranny with the motor than try to mix and match, I expect). If you can work metal, you'll presumably have less trouble than me, since lining up motor mounts and such probably will be more straightforward.

Cheers,
-bkc

OK, thanks for all your comments. Point taken. I have a new donor car, 1981 300SD any comments, cautions, or should I start a countdown to start? Your comments are very much appreciated.

I would suggest you start a separate build thread to document your project.

100,000 miles!

In March of 2012 I got the car on the road with the 617 Diesel engine. At that time it had 181,000 miles on the clock, and today I turned 281,000 miles.

Next goal is the 500,000km badge.

It's been everything I'd hoped for and more.

It's been my daily driver and my preferred cross country cruiser. It's never let me down and has been mostly trouble-free....just expected maintenance items and upgrades.

Nice one. Less than 30000 miles and you've got it. A mere trip to the mall and back for you. 😎 🏎

Whoo-hoo! Glad it has worked out so well for you.

(I finally got a chance to reacquaint myself with my project, so hopefully I will get back on it in the near future and join the ranks of happy diesel convertible folk! Auto shop is settling in, hoping to have the regular opportunity to return to working on mine once I get this first year of tax stuff worked out.)

I just thought I'd use my first post on the site to say thank you very much!
It's a great read which although taking me 2 hours to read thoroughly, I've read it for the last two nights.

Having a 450 SLC here in the UK, this has been quite inspirational. The only possible snag I see, and I haven't done much research yet but, I'm not sure how common the 300 turbocharged unit is here in the UK? I know the N/A units are fairly commonplace but, would a 125 hp N/A unit be enough to pull along a beast of an SLC?

I'll start a thread but, I just wanted to say, congratulations!

Here's a "local" resource for you on all things 107 and diesel in the UK - Not "another" diesel 107!!

...glad you enjoyed the thread.
