The VW's on the list up to 92 have "v" belts and rear ports... but World Pac does not sell them. They used to be $211. My indie found a 508 with rear ports for $248. More details later...

The problem with most of these is the length of the back plate (head), it is too long (deep) and will hit the frame/suspension on a 123, and possibly on a 126. This photo shows the difference:

I pulled these thinking they would work, but only the short one will work.....Rich

another way
Maybe we need to think about this a bit differently. I always thought an AC compressor could NOT be mounted on its side. But after watching the video, maybe we should be looking for a compressor with the ports out the "top" and then turn the compressor on the side, so the ports are pointing toward the driver's fender. Then use the appropriate hoses and 90 degree fittings to connect to it.

After I get my mounting plate up on the engine, I will explore.

Interesting theory, but it could be problematic since the compressor must be 90 defgrees or less from vertical. The mounting plate itself mounts in such a way that it is past that 90 degree limit. Might be ok, but maybe not.

Yes the shorter head is needed weather back or top ports. If the compressor you are getting has 5 bolts, then yes I have a short head for sale (the one in the photo). If you end up getting a compressor with the longer head, test fit it and let us know if there is enough room before replacing the head. I am almost certain it will not fit with the longer head, but it would nice to know for sure....Rich
