If you look on this site - well the Pelican bit - you can see a system of thumbs which kind of gives you a good impression of the brands to go for.

If I remember correctly for the W123 all of the Mercedes boxed motor mount parts were made by Lemforder. I think (forum user and all round good contributor) Diesel911 discovered that nugget of information.

My advice is to stay well away from the cheaper brands and to buy Febi (which is typically priced in the middle) with caution / very low expectations.

As for the engine shocks - I don't really know where this they only help at shutting down story came from but I don't think that that is quite correct. A dashpot will damp over a wide range of frequencies - not just (the expected / supposed) large deflections at start up or at engine stop.

That was a good find in the yard. Just don`t see these FW all that often, I have only seen this one in the past 4 years.

Bolt it on your 300D and tell us how she runs.

Wow Charlie - another bit of amazing luck. This whole west coast east coast thing you lot have going on over there is taking on a new dimension. West coast seems to be leading in the "best place to get 300D manual flywheels" race.

Is the clutch the same?

I am interested in eventually swapping the bigger flywheel in. I am just a little concerned that the spacing somehow would not work out as the bigger flywheel is thicker (diameter is the same). I am just wondering what are the proverbial devils in the details of this job.

I am aware that my motor mounts are in kinda rough shape, actually pretty bad. I do not know the last time the car had a valve job.

Any additional input greatly appreciated

Thanks again,
Hans
You've got your work cut out for you, luckily those are two relaviely easy and well documented repairs.

If you have two cheapo 14mm wrenches, propane torch, and grinder you can make your own valve adjustment wrenches.

For the motor mounts, spend the dough on a quality hex socket. If you round out the bolts you're in for a world of trouble.

FWIW, i have changed injectors and adjusted valves on this car one time each, and the injector job was far easier.

good luck, keep us posted!

Yes, the Clutch Disk is the same as is the Pressure Plate.

The race is on for the next FW on the never ending search.
Can`t let those easterners get ahead.

There's one here in CT, and a MA member found one right here... a Euro 300D 4-speed practically in my backyard, and I missed it!

So we've got two that I can think of. It's on .

match balancing the flywheel

Hey charmalu,

You mentioned you bolted a 300d flywheel to your 240d. Did you get it match balanced. Did you have any vibration issues? Inquiring minds want to know.

Happy Thanksgiving

Yes I got it matched balanced and resurfaced. cost $100.The engine is not installed back into the car.
Got hung up with the Pilot Bearing problem, seems this eng has a 85 crank.
So looks like I need to make a bronze Bushing.

This thread: I`ll add to it when we get the Bushing installed.
Pilot Bearing A Tight Fit, Possibly A 85 crank?

Iam finishing upon a new Clutch replacement and a Transmission bearing replacement project in my new 83 PU. If the weather holds out this next week, I`ll get this finished, then back to the MB engine project.

OOPS!!!!!

Looks like my unicorn was just jackass with a party hat on.

Just for what its worth I just weighed the flywheel I pulled from the euro wagon which I believed to be a 300td. It is indeed only 28 lbs. This really surprised me. I just assumed that since it was a euro wagon that the flywheel would be the heavier 617 flywheel. I realize now that I was wrong so you can subtract one euro flywheel from the west coast count. I am proceeding to source new motor mounts and engine shocks to address the engine idle vibration.

Wiping the egg off my face,
Hans
