I saw a vibration damper offering from febi for 107 euros the other day. If that's all you can get I'd risk driving without for a while - see how it goes. Though the problem with that approach is you either tune out any problem or obsess about it!

Finally, an intro to the 300TD manual project.

Overall, it wasn't just one shop that said this thing was unnecessary, but two different shops.

Powertrain Industries (the second shop), who rebuilt the driveline, installing a new staked in u-joint and center support bearing. As you know, finding a shop to do the staked in u-joints isn't easy. Powertrain Industries, supplies driveline shops around the country. When it comes to drivelines, they are about as close as you can get to experts. They carry their own brands for most of the components, u-joints, center bearings (carrier), flex discs...etc. Many are repackaged, as the flex dics they showed me were the same Lemfoerder ones I had ready to go.

Once they said it wasn't necessary, I believed them. It makes sense if the drive line is properly balanced as a unit, what purpose would this thing really serve? Given the obvious short cycle life of them (I suspect very few people have actually seen an intact one on a car) it would seem to me, when they fly apart, which they seem prone to do, it'd more likely just throw the shaft off balance.'

I can't seem to even find that part on the blow-apart diagram on the EPC site...I'm still learning that application though.
Good info, thanks. I think I would take their word for it, also I'm sure I read here on DD some time back, the same finding. I was wondering because I'm thinking about swapping a N/A 617 into my euro 240D.

I second the motion!

Had a '85 190D 2.2 with 5 speed. Replaced the dampers at both ends of the drive-shaft, found that this damper was missing. No vibrations that I could detect...

I did some googling about it and find what you guys have said, its not a necessary part. I also couldn't find it on the epc, hints to why I asked....and for the life of me can't find on for sale anywhere. My flex discs look fine still, so I will see if I can just knock the rest of it off....doesn't seem like it would be to hard..

Me thinks it's press fit on, I'd try to use a puller on it. But, yeah it's not necessary, which is a good thing because they can't be found (I looked too).

Well did some work on him today, it is so rewarding seeing him get back together.

So today I

Installed the missing tail light and trim...still need to switch the black trim on the other tail light to chrome.

Installed all the locking hardware for the trunk....it locks now!!!

Installed my euro corner lights on the front....the passenger had a broken tab, and of course I broke the other I still have to get all the hardware to mount the lights back on the car.

installed the hood pull.....no more wire!

installed the battery tray

installed new air cleaner mounts.

Went for a drive around the block....amazing how nice he rides and the power! Still have a rough idle that has been around since I got the car that I need to work on.

My custom made bucket seats

tail light with new chrome trim

new corner lights

Battery box

coming back from drive

I hope you have registration and insurance on the car if you drive it on public road. You just never know.

I admire your gallant effort to restore the car but I am always weary about restoration on a 300D. 300D is a dime a dozen and will hardly be a classic in the foreseeable future. It is a lot of work, lot of $$ and it will NEVER be a show queen. But if you enjoy the work then that is the way it is.

Good luck with your restoration.

Its not registered, and no plates on it yet....this town is small and you can drive the strangest vehicles on the roads here and it isn't against the law. If I take it for a longer ride...I will be registering it or using the plates of the 78

The thing this one has going for it, is it is a rare euro model with a 4 speed stick and other euro goodies....it may have value later in the future but I am not looking at it in a value perspective.

I told my self when i started this, I am not focusing on turning this into a show queen, for that I would rather buy a nicer example.

This is just a fun little project on a car that will love and have till I am old and un able to drive.

LOVE IT

Here's another one before I left for the ride...clutching, steering and shifting is very hard sitting on a bucket

I'm glad to see you've got the instrument cluster fitted so you can tell the police that you weren't speeding...

Well today was a productive day!

Yesterday I had to run out of town for an appointment, I really wanted to go to the junk yard sooo bad but I had no monies so had to stay away. We were just getting ready to head out of town, when I checked my phone...I got a 50$ payment for an item I sold...WHOOOPIEEE...so we ran to the junkyard at 5:30pm...the site said they were open to dusk....got out....ran in and my windshield was still there! Plus the butt pad for the front seat I left was still sitting next to the car!

We drove 200+ miles back home, and I was on egg shells hoping the glass wouldn't crack. We made it home and it was in one piece!

I installed it today, and boy what a pita the front windshield is to install. I couldn't get the chrome to hold in the gasket, I then said heck with it and got ready to rope it in to the opening. to my surprise the windshield plus gasket wouldn't fit into the opening because of the gutters...so had to tap them out of the way, got it in the opening....attempted to fiddle with the chrome....still no go....so just roped it in, then I had to figure out how to get the chrome pushed down in the corners...thinking thinking and thinking....I finally just got a small scrap of wood and the hammer...tapping and spraying with suds...I got it in...totally shocked! It looks perfect! I am totally amazed.

The windshield is aftermarket but it is super thick, I am really shocked on how thick it is for a aftermarket!

I also installed the missing door trip and light bulbs in the tail lights...those were also stolen..

So now I have all the glass for the car! Just need a gasket for the rear windshield and they will all be installed!!!
