While hooking up the driver's side horn, I see I am missing the compressor belt! I was wondering why it felt as if the compressor wasn't kicking on! It has been this way since about early June. How could this have happened? Didn't hear anything that I recall and don't think it was that old. Hoping it wasn't removed by a mechanic and the cause of fuse 14 blowing...

What size is the belt? Can it be done with basic hand tools?

Forget hand tools, Chuck Norris can do it BY HAND! Just stretch it a bit over pulley and let go snaps right into place.

That's a new one... "The Case of the Missing AC Belt". Seriously weird. I suppose it can't have slipped off, since it's a v-belt, right? Like, it would have to have broken or been removed?

I think you can check for the belt size in the PP catalog.

...but who steals used v-belts that go to old Mercedes that no-one even drives anymore? The belt isn't even compatible with newer stuff, which is serpentine?

That is the most likely cause, though.

While you are correct, I'm suggesting that he didn't keep it for his own personal use as more likely as a come back for another repair "must have been cracked and old".

Then again who knows?? Could have been the original for all we know.

It could also be that the R4 seized and threw the belt (very common). Check the condition of the wiring for the clutch. I have seen a belt tear off the connection for the clutch......Rich

Good! The Volkswagen is a fiddly task, so expected with all the belts on there and the way Mercedes can be, that their be something to it...

Actually, the A/C only works on road trips as then driving fast enough to make the bent condenser work. I don't need A/C but yes, the puppy does! She even can tell me to turn it on!

Once I get the belt on it might become more oblivious. The electrical shop is what I mean by mechanic and it is a slight possibility, but think highly unlikely. What I am hoping is the belt just decided to retire. I will purchase two just to be safe.

The R4 is basically new, but still possible; hope not. I have been told you take money orders, so if the R4 is seized and the compressor is still $300 I would be seriously inclined to go that route.

Connection looks fine, but good point! I will more closely when the belt is on.

I got the belt, a rebranded Gates Made in the USA, at Carquest (the most helpful).

However, some idiot put the power steering bolts at least 100 foot pounds! I finally got the adjustment loosened but the mount refuses to budge despite jumping on it with all my 140 pounds of manliness. l.o.l.

Any ideas?

??? really? I've never seen the 3 13mm bolt/nut combinations that hold the PS pump to be difficult to remove... if you can't turn the bolts, try loosening from the back just the nuts...
remember, ALL 3 bolts PLUS the tensioner bolt, need to be loosened on the mount before the pump will move.

What really frustrates me is a couple people said the belt just slips on.

Haven't come upon any rusty hardware on the Mercedes. I usually could tell if it was rusty when working on the Volkswagen, but 80 percent was rusty...

So do I need to remove the cruise control to see the back side of the bolt? It is the one on the passenger side by the S.L.S. pump whose lines are blocking easy access. I mean, I only see the one going through the arc on the driver's side and the bolt into the mount previously mentioned.

I thought this be something simple, but now see I need to find the online manual.

I found a string of the former belt in the engine compartment but nothing else seems to be remaining.

I can eat all I want and not gain any fat. I have stayed 140 pounds, yet now my 32 pants fit like I am now down to a 30 waist. I have been doing a lot more stairs in the last year and a half, as studio is on the third floor. I don't use elevators as they trap people. I have also been doing more labor work and see my arms, especially my fore arms getting more toned. According to my build supposed to be 170 pounds... I was a pump 215 in High School.

What I meant was arms extended, then jumping in such a manor to put the weight on my arms to the nut. It scared dad as was rocking the engine which was rocking the wagen.

So cheater on a ratchet? Guess will just have to bite the bullet and buy another half inch ratchet (mine came apart) and extensions. Not seeing how a ratchet get in there without a ratchet and a wrench wouldn't stay in the cheater. Oh and mine is five feet. It was to remove ball joints from the Volkswagen.

So you are then lower body person? Some folks are upper body and can build it great and the lower isn't much, and some can't build the upper and can build the lower. I was a lower body as leg pressed 640 in High School but hardly could bench press 130, especially when my shoulder would pop out of the socket. I lost about 25 pounds in that class, part of it due to eating grits, which I still love.
