That's interesting reading and the 6 or 7cm he221 seem to have better or equal spool time to the stock t25.

I'd be interested in hearing feedback on the t03 and the turbos from the mitsubishi motors. Those are common in the used market here where if I don't like it I'm not out a new turbo purchase price.

He has the cars and engines, it's his project, and his choice, not sure why folks are so hard on the 602 in this application? I mean it's not like it hasn't been done similarly from the factory before:
250GD 602 NA 93hp
290GD 602 Turbo 118hp
UNIMOG 602 Turbo 127hp

Granted the .962 is a slightly different engine but in line at 123hp with the other offerings, and my understanding is this is not being built as a hardcore trail rig. It may be worth confirming the bottom ends of the .938, .939, .981, .982 and .983 to ensure the .962 is stout enough.

If there were no pioneers, we'd all still be living on a flat world. To each their own.

I'd like a quick spooling turbo. Making boost/power by 1500 to 1900 rpms would be optimal.

The stock engine was originally making maybe 180 hp and 250 ft lbs of torque, a 450 lbs 4.0 v8.
Given the points that the OP deems important, and the unknown condition of the donor engine, a pause may be in order. Many of us, with an engine and a vehicle already in hand, have tended to develop a case of tunnel vision over the possibility of combining the two. If 250 ft/lbs. @ 1600-2700 rpm is the measure, please stop. An OM612 is the starting point. What the 4-valve engine starts with is difficult to achieve in a 2-valve engine.
In a high rpm, narrow range racing situation horse power is a meaningful metric; outside of that situation we drive torque, not HP.

The exact rated specs (and they were very generous) for the 4.0 v8 lump is 190 hp and 239 ft lbs torque

I should have been more clear on low end torque needs, I want spool time from an upgraded turbo that is equal to or better than the stock turbo. I didn't want hx40 recommendations!

The land rover isn't a super turbo diesel drift wagon so winding out out 4000 rpms just isn't going to happen.

Is 200 to 250 ft lbs of torque really that unobtainable in an om602 with an upgraded IP?

My little 2.0 vw tdi maks 300 with ease, the only mod is the tune.

In stock form the om602.962 make better power than the 2.5 300tdi the discovery, defender and range rovers came wirh all over the globe. I just needed it juiced up a bit to handle American highways.

Before doing any mods the engine will be put on a stand, pulled down to make sure she's ready to handle the task of pushing a small tank.

Again, a 4-valve Direct Injection engine with a Variable Geometry turbo. As is the OM612.

The 612 doesn't seem to have many conversion plate suppliers. Europe got more om61x options than we did here in the USA. I think there is one vendor on ih8mud seeking interest on om61x adapters to fit land cruiser transmissions.

With the rover my adapter options are an LS v8, om617, om60x, Cummins 2.8 or the factory 4.0/4.6. I can fit other swaps but would require way more fab work

While the 612 may be leaps and bounds better than the 602, can the 602 not make north of 200 ft lbs of torque on a stock block/heads with an upgraded injection pump?

HI Pickle. I suggest if you have not yet done so to test drive a vehicle with the 602 in it. I had one and you really had to wind it up to get any significant progress.

I did drive one. Not too shabby in stock form on a 40 degree morning with one or more glow plugs not working and likely not building proper boost.

I've been too buys to pull the cylinder head to address coolant leak.

I've seen that post and have sent him a pm asking for performance reviews. He has not yet responded.

I've been elbow deep in my 1st gen 4 runner tdi build so I've not been able to pull the head on the 602 yet.
