Hate to reactivate an old post, but I just inherited a 1982 300SD from my godfather. He bought it new in 1982, and I inherited it at 553,492 miles, on the original engine and trans, never rebuilt. Is it uncommon for these cars to make it that far?

With proper maintenance, that's not very uncommon. Neither is getting them to 1 mill. Take car of it and it will give back with longevity.

My 1985 300SD California model is at 282000 miles. I have owned it two months now and have driven it 3000 miles.

It had a transmission "ring gear" replaced in the 90's as well as a new long block from the factory in the 90's (done at a SF dealership for over $8000). I assume that means there is really a lot less than 280k on the engine. I had no idea about that until I dug through the glove box after buying the car.

Just about ready to hit 66k. I bought the car almost two years ago as a daily driver.

At this point I have taken care of all the maintenance and repair issues, it drives like I would imagine a new one did. Best car I have ever owned.

That is a damned good question. I wish I knew the real answer.

I bought my 300SD in 2002 with 61,000 on the odometer. The story I got from the sellers was that they were the second owners who bought the car four years earlier from the original owner. The original owner was supposedly an Air Force colonel who was usually overseas, but kept the 300SD in San Antonio for the times he came home.

I didn't quite believe it at the time, but the car was good enough at the price that it didn't matter. I ran the odometer up to 98,000 in 2007 and the odometer quit working. I drove the car as my daily driver for another year.

A few weeks ago, a guy on the 3000GT forum was offering free CarFax reports. My car came back with a Mercedes service in 1998 with 76,000 miles. I figure at worst 25,000 miles a year from 1998 until 2002.

That makes 76,000 until 1998, figure 10K/yr to 25K/yr 1998 to 2002, and add 47,000 that I put on it. So a high-side answer would be 223,000, low side 163,00 my real guess would be 183,000 (15,000/yr).
