my understanding (and I'm no expert)

As I understand it a brand new engine would be 400 to 425 range on all cylinders. Anything below 200 makes for hard to impossible starting. So 300 or so, especially on all cylinders sounds like...

it sounds like that may be my problem, i'll try it maybe tomorrow and see if that works. i just don't want to screw up the transmission or anything else for that matter. also, i have no one with...

transmission help

Is there something I'm missing here?

I removed a transmission from a 617.950 and am attempting to mate it to a 617.952. It just doesn't seem to want to fit snug up against the engine. Is there a...

rings, probably,,,

I agree with him. It sounds like rings, especially the thing about the bicycle... I had a similar situation though the sound didn;t go away. Testing compression gave poor results on two cylinders.

smart dog

One dog I had loved sparkling wine. If you put a glass in front of him he would do a little dance, snort some up his nose, and then take a drink. He did that until one time he got really wasted and...

underachieving 300SD

I don't understand why your 300SD is getting such poor mileage. Mine has rarely, if ever gotten less than 26 mpg? Maybe someone has some suggestions for him: new injectors, filters, whatever??

what is it called?

1980 300SD, W116. I need new bushings for this part. It is the round bar that goes under the engine at the rear of the upper oil pan from one side of the car to the other. Is it the sub frame or...

mechanical heat and A/C

I did this modification a few years ago after chasing gremlins constatly on my 1980 300SD. Also, I couldn't see $600 or so for an electronic servo that may ormay not solve the heating.

I took out...

Thanks for the information, Trevor. My brother had a 617.952 replace his 1980 617.950 and I do recall something about a part of the cross member being cut out slightly. I'll have to take a closer...

diesel

Jim, the W116 is a 1980 Turbo 300SD. It is a diesel 5 cylinder 617.950 turbo diesel engine. Your engine is a 617.952 turbo diesel engine.

The transmission bolts look a little different, not by...

It is likely....

that you ust have a vacuum leak somewhere. diesels only run if they have air--if they don't have air they stop running. your key just cuts off the air so it can't burn anymore.

find the leak.

maybe a slight vacuum leak

The shutdown part could be a slight vacuum leak or just that the vacuum has not built up yet since you just started it. The diesel quits from air starvation.

Too much.

That would be just too creepy owning a car that once belonged to such a truly evil despot. To each his own, I suppose.

I think that's likely what I'll do. The more I think about it the more I agree that the oil was leaking from somewhere other than the head gasket due to no antifreeze in the oil and no oil in the...
