This appears to be a nice CDI for under 5K in Georgia

I know I love mine so when I saw this I figured at share it with the forum for those who might be looking for a good deal on one.

Watching LSC's CDI videos... I don't know. These cheap CDIs are beat to **** and you don't find the damage until until you really start digging into it. The work is far less DIY friendly than the old prechber diesels or the newer m112/m113 gassers.

$3000 buys a much lower mileage 320 gasser in much better condition with an engine that's just as reliable but easier to work on. On top of that the gasoline w211s are covered under the 15 year unlimited mileage fuel system warranty.

You have to really want the CDI just because.

What's so non DIY friendly about the W211 OM648?

I'd rather own a CDI than an E320/E430, both engines GULP fuel like no tomorrow, my brother and I always joke about selling the wagon for another diesel.

What's so bad about the OM648?

Don't forget to grease the screw and threads on the spring compressor.

Watch his videos. Pulling that stuck injector looked like loads of fun. He has access to some expensive specialized tools the average DIY doesn't. If you really love working on that thing more power to you. I wouldn't touch it. And I certainly wouldn't pay extra for a CDI over the equivalent gasser.

I have as soft a spot for Diesels as anyone else but I’d be surprised if the long term cost of ownership of the CDI is significantly different than an M112. Plus it’s generally easier to find a gasser with a specific configuration than a CDI.

I watched it already and actually enjoyed it.
I wouldn't mind doing that, also both specialized tools are readily available on Amazon and they're not that expensive.

The slide hammer thing was 40$, compared to my delivery valve socket at $40

The brush and injector seating kit is a deal at 110$, my 27mm socket is currently 80$
Not that big of a difference, only 30$. All together $151 for the tools.

Given the cost difference between 87 octane and diesel I suspect the m112 has cost of ownership advantage. For me the decision was really easy because I can't get a CDI wagon in this country. Even if the CDI wagon was available, it's not worth the premium.

Having several (2-'05 CDI, '07 Bluetec, 2-gas sedans, and an '04 M112 powered wagon), I kinda agree. Although I like the rush of power the CDI provides when asked to do so, the wagon has been a wonderful tool for me, even though it is a gasser. All of them have been extremely reliable. One day I may get my wish and have the "best of both worlds" http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/394294-feasability-cdi-drivetrain-swapped-into-e320-wagon.html
Until then, I will enjoy my wagon and all the utilitarian abilities that it provides, even if it requires gasoline as fuel.

As far as pulling injectors on the CDI, been there-done that. It really is not that big of a deal. I had what could have been the worst case of "Black Death" ever on a CDI, and successfully repaired it with minimal hassle.

The rest of the W211 platform has been very DIY friendly to me. I have dealt with transmission issues (conductor plate replacement), suspension parts, airbag replacement, body parts replacement, oil cooler seals (Bluetec), water pump and radiator, as well as other items solved with the help of my Icarsoft MBII scanner. Needless to say, having 6 of them so far (4 drivers and 2 parts cars), I really like these cars......Rich
