Google Chrome
Been using the browser for about one year or so.
Lately, it appears that it's capability to hog memory has become almost intolerable. After a reopen and using it for several hours, with about 10 tabs open, it's consuming over 700MB. The machine only has 2GB and I suspect that the consumption is limiting the capability of pages to load and the overall speed of the machine. Outlook is terribly slow. Any thoughts other than more memory? |

This one lost the "snappiness" months ago. However, after a close and reopen, it's not bad.
After a reboot, it's excellent. However, I really don't care to reboot the machine every morning................ |

I run CC Cleaner every other day or so to cut out the clutter.
It seems to help.

I run MSIE with no active features. I run Chrome when I want active features. Neither one seems too balky until I get 15 or 20 windows open.

I think the problem here is an ancient computer. 2GB ram? Most phones now have more than that. Chrome does like to use about 600MB+ of ram, it will use 6GB if you have it and have many tabs open, but if you were running an operating system that was modern and could manage ram use and resources properly, it wouldn't be an issue. XP does not deal well with much over 2.5-3GB of ram, and with 32-bit, you'll be maxxing out at 3.2GB usable anyways. I am running Win7 with 16GB of ram on a system also running multiple virtual machines, and never have slowdowns...and my PC is by no means "top of the line". Realistic lifespan of a (decent) computer is about 4-5 years. Low end pc, 2-3. Considering you can now buy 16GB of ram for about $40 or less, why suffer with old slow technology?

Based upon the excellent advice of Cullennewsom, I downloaded Chromium to see how it would perform. Note that I started it up and copied each tab from Chrome to Chromium. With both browsers open and running, the two of them suck up 1.5GB of resources on the 2GB machine. But, lo and behold, Chromium has no issues with speed and the pages load instantly without any hang on any page, despite the heavy burden on the RAM. So, in conclusion, you don't have a clue as to what you're recommending. We have conclusively shown on the other thread that you're a typical devotee of M/S and will constantly support the new product because the old one is NG anymore. This is a perfect example of how you're wrong, yet again. |

Unfortunately, you fail to see the benefits of older systems to most folks and instantly recommend new hardware to cure any and all ills. You made a blanket statement that 2GB is insufficient to run Chrome and you were dead wrong. The problem was not the 2GB, it was the Chrome browser itself. Pick a different browser and the problem disappears. You failed to even consider this possibility. Didn't you drive an older SD and your father also drives an older SD? Why change your philosophy that "new" is better when it comes to vehicles? You're so disingenuous that you'll recommend brand new IT hardware at the drop of the hat but won't consider a brand new automobile for exactly the same reasons. This is hypocritical beyond the pale. |

I have used my SD to power my old Toughbook running XP....
![]() Mostly the computers I buy are lease returns, so I tend to be a year or so behind the curve. Except for my laptops, they are older than that. Basically each of my laptops has a specific job to do, and as long as they run, are stable and complete their tasks, I will not replace them. Long ago I decided to use multiple machines, each with one task, but each able to perform any of the tasks (basically one runs audio analyzing software, one performs playback, and one records). I have had people scoff at my arrangement, whip out their latest and greatest laptop du jour that can DO EVERYTHING!!!, then get all bound up when their machine freezes and they are dead in the water. I suppose if someone else were paying, I would like to have all brand new gear, but by using older machines, I am able to maintain a level of redundancy which I would not like to trade away. I did have to get the company to upgrade my work laptop due to software compatibility issues running ProTools !0 in conjunction with my DiGi mixing console..... It's just too cool to be able to multitrack live shows with nothing more than a laptop and two minutes of digital patching. But, it just won't work on XP, and it really likes more than 4g of ram

Brian look into one of the flash killer add-ons and for pete's sake put some more memory in that thing. The stuff is dirt cheap. Also, look at Chromium, it's Chrome, but without Google looking over your shoulder.

This browser is fast as hell despite the RAM loading and, as a bonus, the typeface is larger than Chrome for some reason. Thank you.........thank you...........thank you. |

I also find that it helps to kill/restart my browser every week or so, I suspect due to memory leaks in flash.
