Post S Klasses Masochisim

A friend of mine called me up, his daughter's girlfriend just left it in his driveway, of course she'd been gifted it by her rich parents.....

So no papers nor even the doggone key .

Ha asked me if I wanted it or any parts, I said I'll take a few bits, then we dragged it out into the street and left it blocking a fire hydrant, called his buddy the Chief of police and it was gone in 15 minutes .

I like to ride in my brother's S Klasses, an '81 W126 300SD and an '87 300SDL with OM603 , both are fine cars to be sure but I'm a simple man and like the basics .

You got me excited with this listing being on a Diesel forum. There is nothing that I can see that it is a Diesel. It is just a gasser, so that price is about right. If it WAS a Diesel (CDI), I am sure it would be gone by now.

Not so on a W124/W210/W202 etc. EVERYTHING is much cheaper, and more OEM parts are available.
Let's be honest, most of the problems you've had with your SDL were caused by you. There are several threads you started on this forum to back that up in your own writing!

Rebuilding the suspension is NOT that bad. You don't need a special tool, and a good number of the rubber bits are similar and similar in price to the W124 and W123, so I don't understand where you get off claiming the price is so high.

Do what needs to be done as it needs it and avoid the temptation to go "shutgun" on the thing and replace literally everything at once. If you don't have a space to work on a car that needs work (any 123, 126, 140, 202, 210 is gonna need a place to work on it), you should be looking at something newer and domestic so you can have someone else work on it without breaking the bank. ANY 20+ year old car (and I don't care who made it or where) is going to need work done to the suspension, and likely to the drivetrain as well.

Sorry if that sounds cold and direct, but sometimes things just need to be said! Nothing personal.

I hear what you're saying.

In the end, the control arm bushings DO cost a fortune too me IMO.
For instance control arm bushings 126-333-38-14 is $630 for the 4 you need.
The rest of the control arm bushings for the front alone are $1255.
For the W124 it's only $219 for all front bushings and ball joints, correct me if I'm wrong. I don't mean it in a snarky way, I could be addinb stuff up wrong.

The subframe kit and axle to housing subframe bits are $93 vs $315 (W126)
Diff mounts are $20 together vs $292(W126).
I just don't agree on that.

BTW today I checked out a 300D 2.5, I knew from the start how he was beating around the bush he was describing a rough idle due too a dead cylinder. "When it warms up it runs better". I started it and it sounded horrible, however even worse was the SHEER HORRENDOUS vibration caused by a dead cylinder. I mean it SHOOK the car and rattled my body to core.

Drop tested the cylinders and sure enough cylinder #5 was completely dead. Had to turn it down. The throttle linkage was knackered, the and there was JB weld on one of the injector to seal it in the head, christ.

Maybe I need to move the pricing bracket up some.

When you consider that just about every part you list as expensive is available from Lemforder (the OEM supplier to Mercedes) for roughly 25% of what the MB-Star marked part (most likely supplied by Lemforder) is available for, your arguments start to lose a lot of credibility.

Where can I find them? I don't see them listed on the big box Mercedes parts websites. All I can find is genuine Mercedes.

On another note, I'm thinking about picking up a clean non running Mercedes for cheap, there's one with an electrical issues and another with a bad fuel pump. If either-or passes the compression test, it's fair game.

Thumbs up White 300CD

Looks nice, too bad he glosses over the bad brakes ~ I wonder what else it needs, the Parchement interior is a plus too in spite of the bad seat .
