the ARV on the turbo points it out to be an 85 indeed. also, the air cleaner has the elongated Utube connector.

crawl under the car and look at the diff ratio stamp. 2.88 is a dead giveaway!

What's the difference between the Cali and Federal 85? Is the Cali the one with the expensive air filter element?
No doubt it is an '85, especially if registration says it is. A friend of mine has a Federal '85 as well (in Cali), and yours is the only other one I have seen.
The Cali version has the trap-oxidizer and the canister "trash can" type air cleaner. Both the Cali and Federal 1985 have a rack position sensor and all the other vacuum operated gizmos on the wheelhouse. Lucky for you that yours is NOT a Cali version!

Take a look at the last pictures in this post, this is a Cali engine.

My 1985 300D (Pics, finally)

What's an ARV? I recall driving at 65 mph the rpm was around 3k, which is lower than my 83 at the same speed so it must have the 2.88 diff.

See the doomaflotchy thingy on the front of the Turbo with the blue vac line running to it? that is the ARV. I believe it bleeds off som boost pressure under certain circumstances.

84 and 85 years had this thing.

Thanks Charlie, What does ARV stand for?

I do believe the odometer is correct. Owner has 2 houses, one in CT and another in FL. They keep 4 cars in the garage, 2 in each state. They have no kids (clean interior) and spend the winters in FL. They take the train, not drive or fly. When in FL, they disconnect the battery on the Mercedes and put the car on blocks (tires off the ground). They made their FL home their primary residence 12 years ago. Per the service booklet, in 98, the car had 134k, current it is at 157K so they put on only 22k in the last 14 years!. They are obviously wealthy and IMO would not skimp on service. Not being car people, they are at the mercy of garages who do the service for them.

I was told they were charged $275 two weeks ago to drain the tank and change the filters due to low power caused by Algae. Does that sound high or reasonable?

Well my answer is it sounds like a lot of money BUT I can tell you that these days if you bring your car to a large shop around here, with a straight-labour problem like that (no parts sales involved) then you can expect to pay a premium for their shop time.

It's easy to cry foul but even with things being this way, indy shops are going out of business on a regular basis around here. Paradox: it's the largest ones, the ones I call "quasi-dealers," that are surviving.

By the way, Funola, congrats. That is almost (one shade of blue away) a twin to my car, also an '85 Fed (from the US). I am about to turn 100k.

You will want to get on top of that rust and make it a keeper.

Have no idea what ARV stands for, maybe........POS.

$275 sound high to us DIY type guys. but the indie I was using charges $117 HR labor rate. so 2 hrs and it gets up there plus tax, enviro fees and other over had costs etc.... it adds up.

Sounds like you found a keeper. maybe they have a car in Florida that is going to be up for grabs too.

I have not used a mechanic for so many years that I have no idea what is reasonable anymore. I understand that that they do have overhead costs and that must factor into their labor rates.

I shot a video of the car from a cold start and will post a link later. It sounded normal so I didn't even do a compression test before making my offer. Mistake?

How many actually get a compression test done before purchase?

Thanks Zac. About to turn 100K? What's the story behind that? Any pics?

Any other important differences I should know about the Federal 85 that is different than my 83? I will have to sell my 83 unfortunately, which I have done a lot of mechanical work on to make it run so well now. I love my 83, it starts and sounds just as well as the 85 that I will have soon. Has a custom grease system unlike anything on the market, and performs the best IMHO. I will sell it with or without the grease kit if anyone here is interested.
