Day 2 of testing

I think I got the fuse deal sorted out for now by installing the proper amperage fuse (DUH!). It still gets a little hot, but is still working. I drove the car today about 200 miles with nice cold A/C. I did find that the idler bolt is touching the PS belt slightly. I have a 3 1/8" pulley on it now, but a 3 1/2" might rotate it just enough for the bolt to clear the belt. The production units will have the compressor mounted slightly further away from the engine, thereby making the idler lower and further from the PS belt. Everything else seems to be working fine. I have not made an oil cooler hose bracket yet, but will make it tomorrow (and post photos and details of course!)....Rich

Day 3 of testing and oil line bracket fabrication

Day 3 of testing. I did not use the car much today, other than making a trip to Pick-A-Part to get an engine and trans. By the way, a 2.3 Mitsubishi Diesel short block, 5 speed transmission, and a full box of tools fit just fine in a 126 trunk! The A/C worked flawlessly today. I purchased the steel to make the oil cooler line brackets, and started making a pattern. I made the pattern out of aluminum to make sure it will work. It will also be used to make the final pattern for the cutting machine

Test fitting it:

I then made one out of 1/8 X 2" flat bar cutting out the profile on the cutoff saw:

Finished product painted and ready to install:

Thanks.
So what are you gonna do for power brakes vaccuum?

The vacuum pump runs off the timing chain anyway, so no belt required.

Put me on the waiting list!! Yak's R4 install is still going strong, but for ~$150 I'd like to have the bracket just in case!!

I've turned on email notifications for PM's just for this bracket!!

My 150 AM alternator will power an electric water pump and an electric vacuum pump from an Audi. No power steering -- got a manual box.

So, in the cooler months -- not many in S.C., I just need to turn the alternator and in the warmer months, which is most months in S.C., I need to turn the best possible AC options out there.

Because it is a few months away, DO NOT wait for me to buy the bracket when you have other customers. I will buy one off the next lot.

Okay guys...Question: Why are we trying to reinvent the wheel.?

I have installed a brand new R4 from World Pac on a 1983 126 and it was a breeze. Cools fine, but I did fit a parallel condenser and twin fans off a '92 124. ( Shop 104F. Vent Outlet 61.)

Because R4 compressors are CRAP. Pretty much no matter what you do with them. This is a thread for those who want a different compressor, not necessarily those happy with their current ones. Besides, 61°F at the vent is nothing to gloat about.

This wheel is much better, and is also less expensive in the long run. It would be nice to have a compressor that will last the life of the car (or at least longer than the R4).....Rich

Thank you Rich. Will now need to check this out so I can give this as an option to my customers.
I see the 508 is not recommended. What is ?

I made some progress today on the plates. I picked them up and started the welding.

Here they are with the first welding operation done:

A friend of mine is going to drill the 3 remaining mounting holes on each piece for me. He wanted to have the first parts welded so he can use his mill to bore the holes on an angle with the plate in the welding fixture. I also brought the oil cooler line bracket pattern to that my fabricator, so he can flame cut the parts out. I should have them by the end of next week. I would like to have all the parts cad plated, but that may not be in the budget (I will have to work some numbers to know for sure). If cad plating does not work out, the parts will be just painted black (automotive paint). I am driving the SD everyday, so testing is going good. There are no issues yet.....Rich

What is your source that shows the 508 is not recommended? From what I can tell it's the de facto standard for aftermarket A/C compressors. When I did the research for what I hoped to be able to do for my project, I came up with the Sanden 508 as the #1 unit on my short list. Whether you're talking about hot rods, replacement units, aftermarket gear, large trucks even hydraulic powered compressors it almost always comes down to Sanden and within Sanden, the 508.

Always interested in fresh opinions, new data and new sources.

Thanks

I am not sure where you got the idea about the 508, but that IS the recommended compressor.
