Understood, and I appreciate the information and encouragement.

I will advertise the complete car for sale, to give an enthusiast the opportunity to purchase the package. Won't know till I try. This will also help me in knowing that at the very least, I tried to find it a better future!

However, barring the attention of the 'handful' of enthusiasts, with resources and desire to take this on, the car will be [gently] dismantled and sold/used for parts.

As the car sits in the garage, I’ve been examining it in comparison with my 300cd. Much more sound in many respects, right down to the pliable rubber weather strip.

Was pile carpeting an option in the USDM? Also, I haven’t seen ay other coupes without sunroofs, we’re they an option or standard?

Sunroofs are rare delete option on US cars.

Nice.

This car is in much better shape than my CD. Given that, and the overall rarity of the car itself, I've decided that if the car doesn't sell complete, I will swap drive-trains, and use the CD for parts/part-out.

I've done more than my share of conversions, and comparatively, this should be MUCH easier. The 617 management systems are very minimal, and the CD has all the mounting hardware I'll require (theoretically).

Anyone know the transmission used in the CE?

Have look at the transmission oil pan; 4 bolts or 6 bolts?
4 = 722.1xx or 722.2xx
6 = 722.4xx

Great tip!

I'll give it a look. I know the CD has 4. Are the two transmissions interchangeable?

722.3 with 6 bolts is a possibility but I doubt that’s what the CE has.

I think the starters are on opposite sides of the engine so my guess is the transmissions aren’t interchangeable. The governors and other components probably aren’t suited to interchange even with physical fit.

Doing some research, it looks like the bellhousings can be removed. Perhaps they can be swapped? Both transmissions are vacuum controlled.

Is there an ID tag somewhere on the transmission?

Swap project begins in a couple days!

Maybe the bell housing comes off the CD transmission. I don’t know of any 722.3 or .4 transmissions with removable transmissions, but that might be ignorance. Some engines have a removable plate that mates with the bell housing.

There should be a long string of numbers on the transmission casting just above the pan gasket line on the starboard side. Look for numbers that contain 722.3xx or 722.4xx. I don’t renember where the older 722.0 and .1 identification numbers are. It must be 20 years since I’ve had a wrench on one.

Thanks for the tip. Both identification numbers were stamped in the location mentioned. Numbers are as follows:

CD = 722.118
CE = 722.122

The transmissions selves look identical (from what I can see of them at the moment). Both bellhousings appear to be removable.

That should simplify things for you, though I would keep the CD engine and transmission together. I thought the newer 722.3 and .4 were available in all 123s by ‘81. I guess it was only the TD turbo.

The transmission in the CD is on its last legs. I’ve flushed the fluid twice, and treated it with trans-x. Still “flares” and now slips out of fourth on inclines. I’m hoping the CE transmission is in better shape. In the meantime I can attemp a rebuild of the 118.

Since the starter is on the opposite side (CD vs CE), and the bell is interchangeable on both transmissions, you are golden. If the CE in fact had a 722.4, then you would have to use the CD trans with the D engine (or find a good one/rebuild the original). The 722.1 for the D are quite common, so it should not be a problem finding a good one should the need arise.

You may want to try to up the modulator pressure before giving up on the CD trans. These are vacuum only, and adjustments are critical. The VCV (Vacuum Control Valve on the Injection Pump) needs to work properly, as well as the modulator needs to hold pressure. The O ring in the modulator cap goes bad sometimes, and causes a leak. Also, the cap itself can get a crack or leak. Check these things first, and maybe you can save some work changing out the bell on the trans.
