Tom one thing I thought I should mention. The rad seems to get enough air flow on my thirty nine buick. Actually by design the front end is similar to the Studebakers in some respects. Back in those days the front rails where closer together and the inner fenders where too.

I find with the 327 in the compartment there is not enough exit airflow. So it remains a little hotter under the hood than I would like. Causes no engine coolant system problems at all though.

Hopefully your vertical five cylinder engine is no more restrictive than the original one was to through airflow. . I think wrapping my headers or engineering some type of additional ventilation into the inner fenders when and if I get time would help in my case.

I guess I am just saying have a look down alongside the engine to see if there are good exit areas for the airflow. I do not know the comparative widths of the studabakers original engine and the Mercedes five cylinder engine. Again just a random thought that occurred to me.

Early thirty nine buicks had two design issues that had to be addressed. The early thirty nine grills had the teeth of the grill too close so the grill whistled. Also they eliminated the rear frame past the rear axel. This was a disaster. My thirty nine was a later in the year production so had neither issue. Your truck seems to be moving along well now.

I talked to Michael today. He has the radiator hoses hooked up, the hood and front fenders aligned and mounted the doors hung and the running boards straightened. I just ordered a hvac unit from vintage air today. I may go up early tomorrow. I need pictures!

vintage air, I am told by my classic car club pals, makes the best AC units for these old cars.

I ALREADY SPENT MY DISCRETIONARY $4K this year on power front disc brakes and power steering, that made my 1967 Cougar a nice easy driver (took it to Nevada the other day for a date and to get the proper touch up paint (illegal to sell or supply in California!!) for it.

vintage air may go on it next year. The Mustang resto shop that looks afer my Cougar is amazingly, a DEALER for vintage air.

He told me (owner of the shop) in answer to MY question, that it would be MY choice as to whether to put R134a or the more expensive R12 in the car.

R12 is harder to get now, and LOTS more expensive when you do, but I am a lot more comfortable with it, and it cools better than R134a does.

Which of the two will you select for the Studebaker?

I have not thought about it. I'll prolly ask for advice from my old car buddies here and here.

He gave me a price on putting on some excellent paint today. I think I am going ahead with that. I am also thinking of black ...Which is original.

See post #2 this thread.

Are you maintaining the 1939 headlights, or are you going for the 1940 headlight buckets which will allow you to run 7" sealed beams?

That is not decided. I like the convenience of the sealed beam but the original 39 headlight is so subtle as a styling statement....smooth. If I can get the original 39s working I might just go with them.

I agree. Unless you plan on lots of clandestine midnight moonshine runs, which isn't likely given your power train choice, the decrease in lighting performance is trumped by style.

So you are saying "function is tethered to form's leash", no?
