That statement is 100% correct - it's like bell bottoms, disco and the like. I don't hate rap -but I don't (like) to hear it along with quite a bit of other current music. I am careful with my comments as it's their generation and they (kids) have the right to their own opinions.

I can still bring out the vinyl and annoy them occasionaly too

"Rap crap" says it all(almost)
I'm with Mike on this. Some of the early stuff actually was fun to listen to, once I got over the initial "what the hell is that noise?!" Beastie boys kinda caught my ear early on. And this is coming from an old fart like me! Most of the stuff from the 70's (my teen years) annoys me about as much as todays current rap-crap does. So I suppose annoying music is always going to be with us.
Whatever your taste is, you still should admit the "message" of rap is not needed though.

Like Mike said, all genres have their share of bad music and there's good music to be found there as well. Well, except country.

I like a lot of rap, but most of what I hear and most of what is on MuchMusic or MTV is beyond stagnant. A lot of kids pick up on it as well. What I find really funny is meeting a lot of kids at our shows and finding out that 14-17 yr olds are into Zeppelin, AC/DC, Floyd, etc. It really is amusing. I was talking to some teens after a show about music and they got into an argument about which was better - Led Zeppelin II or III.

It warmed my heart.

I keep an open mind to all kinds of music and whatever moves me, I like. There's a good song to be found in any genre, if you listen enough.

If you want to hear a sad music story . . . much like what happens in nature, the introduction of a foreign species has almost completely wiped out an indigenous form . . .

"Jawaiian" the combination of reggae with "Hawaiian" themes has produced an "island" sound that is more Jamaican than polynesian, much to the dismay of traditionalist. I guess it's more like the rift between the contemporary C&W and the roots artists.

Some of you guys have no knowledge on rap... and thats part of the reason why you hate it so much.
There are 3 types of rap music.. "pop" rap (AKA ludacris,p. diddy, 50cent, etc), "hip hop culture/underground" rap (Run DMC, Dead Prez, Eric B and Rakhim ) and "gangsta" rap (NWA, Tupac*, Notorious B.I.G, etc.)

1) Pop rap are the ones that you usually hear on TV and see on MTV the most. They have some poseurs with mediocre talent rapping for young teens and their motive is strictly $"bling bling"

2) The "hip hop culture/underground" rap is what "anti-war/anti-politics" songs were in the 60's. These were rap with politics, life and death oriented songs. You also find this type in real hip hop clubs, but nowadays you see more "pop"

3) "Gangsta" rap is probably what many of you think when you hear "rap". Essentially current and former street thugs rapping about hate. gangs, killings, rape, etc. Targeted audience are those who think of themselves as macho and cool,

4) "Old school" rap.. blend of the above three but are considered "old schoo" if its more than 5 years old.

*Tupac recorded various types of rap, some were "gangsta" and some were pure "hip hop"

Remember... the older folks on the forum will probably remember when all that rock from the 60's and 70's were considered "garbage" by people who are currently in your age. Each generation has their own form of music... while the previous generations look down on it. For those who like country and banjo tunes.... y'all are nothing but sissies

Unfortunately most music today is a little to angry, and rap tops the list. It must be the times - people in general seem a bit angry for me. Some good music out today but you really have to sort thruogh to find it. My H.O.

Most of the music from my generation (teen in 60's) really was crap. Some of it was okay. A very small bit was pretty good. All we here now of the music from back then is the most popular. You know when I heard myself slump over-the-hill? When I heard "my" music advertised on oldies hit collection (vinyl) on TV. It seemed to jump from Sinatra to Hendrix in about a month.

My oldest likes hiphop, which just sounds dopey to me. But sometimes the lyrics are pretty clever. She heard some song mention a car and she asked me about it. "Daddy," (22 and still calls me Daddy,...I hope she never stops), "what's a Maybach?"

Hiphop can't be all bad, hmm?

I like the old school stuff that was all about dancin',challenging each other in competition, wheterh in rapping/or dj's etc....think RDMC. Some if it was pretty humorous.

Anyone remember Sugar hill Gang. Not violent, just funny.

I really started to dislike all the women bashing, drive by crap that came around after that.

Some of 2pacs lyrics are really good if you take the time. Wax not in favor of his vilent crap either. But he did a credible job when "rapping" about the trials and tribulations of African Americans.

Anybody remember the Drifters? I attended one of their performances at Anton's on Broadway in Washington, D.C., some years ago. It was wonderful. And no rap.

Boardwalk ... on the Boardwalk.

WOW!

Ah, the Sugarhill Gang- I think the first manufactured rap group!

The lyrics to 'rappers delight' are halarious by todays standards, but that was a really important record.

Occassionally there's something that'll come out thats sparks my interest these days, but most mainstream hip hop seems cliched, stupid and dull. Or maybe I'm just getting old, yo.

I'm in the some rap is good, some rap is crap spot. I listen to it on occassion, and *gasp* enjoy it. I can appreciate it for what it is worth. What most of the old guys on this board consider rap is the commercialized pop rap, which appeals to the thug life. I hope I am never old enough to generalize a genre of music bases on a few songs I hear on TV. Open your ears folks, I can direct you towards some good rap, that was made in the last 5 years.

I thought there were only 3 types.... You listed 4 types. Hmmm....

:p Just pickin' on ya'.

Seriously, my dislike of most rap and country music is NOT a generational thing....I've been very picky and particular and some would say "snobbish" about my listening habits since I can remember. I grew up on 70's rock, 70's funk/R&B, 80's new-wave, early hip-hop, with a few bands from the 60's, and some disco songs and 80's "hair bands" thrown in the mix, and I was also a "band-geek", so I was into classical, which was VERY "uncool" to many of my peers....and a lot of all of those kinds of music sucked as well...But some of it didn't. You just have to sort through the crap to find the gems.

Screw all the genre and sub-genre crap. There are really only 2 kinds of music. Music that sucks, and music that does not suck. Unfortunately, there is much more of the former than the latter.

Mike
