Changing oil in a Sanden Compressor

This is a good You Tube video on changing the oil in a Sanden.

R-12 uses Mineral oil
134-A uses Pag oil

Do not mix the 2 oils if going from R-12 to 134-A or back the other way.
Ester oil should be used in this case.

Evidently Sanden isn`t selling Compressors for R-12, and only for 134-A.

Junk Yarding for a compressor would be the same thing, probably best to drain it anyway.

I will have to watch that this evening. I've been to their website:

The VW's on the list up to 92 have "v" belts and rear ports... but World Pac does not sell them. They used to be $211. My indie found a 508 with rear ports for $248. More details later...

The problem with most of these is the length of the back plate (head), it is too long (deep) and will hit the frame/suspension on a 123, and possibly on a 126. This photo shows the difference:

I pulled these thinking they would work, but only the short one will work.....Rich

another way

Maybe we need to think about this a bit differently. I always thought an AC compressor could NOT be mounted on its side. But after watching the video, maybe we should be looking for a compressor with the ports out the "top" and then turn the compressor on the side, so the ports are pointing toward the driver's fender. Then use the appropriate hoses and 90 degree fittings to connect to it.

After I get my mounting plate up on the engine, I will explore.

Interesting theory, but it could be problematic since the compressor must be 90 defgrees or less from vertical. The mounting plate itself mounts in such a way that it is past that 90 degree limit. Might be ok, but maybe not.

Agreed. The extra angle past 90 might be just enough to cause a problem with the compressor. There also may not enough room for the fittings between the compressor and the frame.

So back ports are only preferred if it's not the longer version of the back ports.

Crap... my indie is ordering one with back ports ... IDK if it's got the shorter head or not. I did not buy the one on ebay because I wanted one with back ports...

Do you have extra back port short plates to sell?

Yes the shorter head is needed weather back or top ports. If the compressor you are getting has 5 bolts, then yes I have a short head for sale (the one in the photo). If you end up getting a compressor with the longer head, test fit it and let us know if there is enough room before replacing the head. I am almost certain it will not fit with the longer head, but it would nice to know for sure....Rich

My indie wrapped it up and had the world pac guy come out and pick it up... but told him his dilemma. Then the world pac guy came with a couple compressor units and tried to match up one with the bracket- and the first one fit perfect. It's a brand new japanese unit: SELTEC 36000819 installed in Volvo's. It was a bit more expensive but after having him try to install the rear port and then clean it and send it back I had no room to ask for a cheaper unit. I also had a new windshield installed and that is awesome! Looking forward to a cold a/c experience.

Rollguy,

Sorry if a repeat, but looks like my question didn't post.

What exactly do you mean by "all metal lock nuts"? Do you mean the type with a swage at the end which distorts the threads, or do you mean a separate split lock washer? The former might be hard to find in metric. I don't mind getting locally if you can give an Ace Hardware PN or exactly what to ask for. Thanks.
