Just Bought Another Diesel Engine

Seems like Diesel Engines are falling out of the sky so to speak.

Dec my Wife Bro in Law and I pull a engine out of a 84 300SD. He wants to drop one in his 82 240D and 4-spd.

Then in Jan I pull one out of a 85 300TD, and a few other good parts. this one had just been set and still had the 3rd row seat, Cross bars and perfect Tail Lights. pulled the front tortion Bar and couple other things.

Then I pull another 617 engine out of a 80 300SD. this one had been hit super hard in the L/R and the drivers door will not close, so tweeked the body good. best thing is the eng and trans was just rebuilt. it was totally clean. they had written on the air cleaner foam a milage of 269122, and the spedo showed 270300. and a date of 5-21-12. so this shows 1178 miles, so think I may have scored a good one.
Plus the guy up graded from the 617.950 to the 951. so that is going from 110hp to 123hp. so that was a good thing. I was surprised when I saw the .951 on the side of the head.

My Datsun Diesel PU 5-spd transmission has a bearing that is complaining. I drained the trans oil and is grey/yellow collor with some silvery look to it.
I spent some time at a buddys machine shop trying to swap the 5-th gear from a junk 5 spd to a good 5-spd I have with a lower gear 5 gear. got this eng and a trans that was shpped in from Japan about 20 years ago, (one of those 25K mile used engines) so don`t know what this 5-spd was used in. after taking the 5th gears out, discover they are made different and won`t swap over.
The out put shafts on these 5-spds are 14" long from the rear splines to the 5th gear, and needed a 38mm or 1 1/2" socket. found a 38mm, cut it in 1/2 and welded ea end to a black iron pipe to slip over the shaft. now I have a 2ft long special socket. that big nut on the transmissions that came in these trucks are Left handed threads. this other one is right handed threads. (trial and error)
I bought new nuts from the dealer, and this big one is $20 and wouldn`t work if we coud have swapped the gears. you would have thought these gear boxes would be the same.

So last night I get to looking around in CL and found a Nissan SD-22 Diesel engine and 5-spd from a 82 Datsun PU that was hit in the left front. guy bought it for a project and has had it in his garage for a while and wants it gone. says it has less than 110K miles on it for $550. these eng/trans are rare, sooooo I called him @ 8:30 this morning, Paypaled him the $ and now am the proud owner of another engine/trans.

Going up to Portland in 2 weeks in the 240 (Grand Daughters 4th BD) and will bring the transmission home, then going back in July (Daughter having another one, a boy) so will have this new trans in the old Datsun, and use it to go back for the engine. Just hope she is up to the trip up and back.

Now to figure out where to stack one more engine.

Then the guy tells me he has a 82 240D, w/o the engine. had some work done to it and the shop didn`t reatach the hold down bracket for the Oil Cooler lines on the AC Bracket. the vibration cracked a line and lost the oil.

Aaaand.... he has a new, never used 240D turbo Kit/set up never been used.
This is something that was sold in Europe I guess????

Go for it, you can`t have too many.

Ya know, one of these days, you won`t be able to find one.

There's something comforting about having a spare engine ready to drop in should anything happen. I already used my spare transmission, so it's time to start looking around to have one of those on hand.

Charlie, you are one energetic man! I am impressed! Wish you were closer, I'd wanna buy some of your stuff if you'd sell.

Interesting problem you have there Charlie. I have the opposite problem. I have thought for years that if I had a bunch of 616/617's laying around, I could sell one a week! I get calls all the time (ads for 123 parts on CL) from people that need an engine. What we need to do is provide rust free bodies to the folks in the "rust belt" in trade for engines and transmissions. I have 3 parts cars all with good bodies and fair interiors, but all with bad engines (or used as engine donors) and/or transmissions. The 240 I have could actually be put back on the road if I had a decent engine for it. It has an automatic now (ugghhh), but I have a complete 4 speed setup available. I have been robing parts off of it (alternator yesterday for my 240 driver), so it would need a complete engine/trans donor. Maybe we could get our parts/cars together somehow and get some cars back on the road!

Thing about engines up here is that they get rusty! Worst is the turbo area due to the heat cycles.. Bolts so rusted they are one with the peices there hilding together or about to turn to dust. I should get a pic of the motor in my garage. So far there is about 3 pounds of rust on the garage floor from it.

Around here Benz diesel motors still bring good money. It is rare to find a Engine under 500 or a running car under 800. Seems everyone is putting a 617 or 616 in there toyota offroad truck or project.

Having extra motors is nice but they do take up alot of space.

Now there's an idea - how about a peach parts meet => I bet if we could get ten people together with all those parts we could build a car in a day. Or take our time over a week end and drink some beer as well.

Gas Monkey garage has nothing on us!

I assume the "us" and "we" includes you Stretch? If so, that would be worth the price of admission! I say book that plane flight and lets "git er done".

Charlie, you got to be up to seven engines laying around! If I had the room and weren't storing two motors at friends houses, I'd have a 616 (number 4)and a 603 (number 5) this week in my possession! Lol

Well if you are serious I'll get some time off for good behaviour.

However, I'll have to be good for a while...

...this could get tricky!

You wouldn`t be keeping a tally on my inventory now, would you?
Well actually 6 and 7 if you count the eng on the stand from the 85. then 2 Nissan SD-22 in the barn, and the 82 Datsun parts truck and it`s engine etc...

Now Iam going to Portland, Or. (740 miles) for another one? I need help.

You don't need help, you just need HD shelving to stack them, and a forklift to put them up there.
