Nope, the Montanabahn has been shut down. Speed limit is 75 daytime for cars, and 65 for trucks. Nighttime is 65 for everyone.

I'm not sure why this turned into a "beat on IanMB thread", but I wouldn't sweat it if I were him. That said, I think excessive speed, regardless of the vehicle, is very dangerous unless carried out in controlled conditions (read as "on a track") with safety gear, fire personnel, etc. Nearly all states have tracks where cars can be raced under conditions safe enough to do so. There are far too many variables on regular roads, whether rural or not, (road condition, critters, other vehicles, etc.) and to disrespect them is to play with your life, or worse someone elses. The island I live on is known for the huge Live Oak trees that are right along side of the road. About every six weeks someone learns how hard they actually are after losing control speeding. It's shame. And I'm no bore, either. On a flat water day I am very likely to pass you by at 70+mph in my boat...

Around here, dude, you have to carry a flame-proof suit and a tinfoil hat with you at all times! ![]() I must admit that I often treat highway speed limits as "suggestions" as well....but the laws are the laws, and I'm not going to cry about paying the price if I get caught. I think speed limits on large, multi-lane, major highways are often much too low and "idiot-proofed". There's a 4-lane, divided, limited-access, high-visibility highway near my house with a speed limit of 35mph! ![]() To start: If we would actually bother to teach people how to drive here in the US, we'd be a lot better off. Tickets and fines do not make a person a better driver, just a more cop-wary driver. Mike

Well, speeding tickets are usually revenue boosters for communities and don't involve the criminal element. Celebrities can get away with more outlandish behavior than regular folks, and knowing the police helps. Nonetheless, at least in MO, if you're going double the limit you are going to jail. Going 205 is definitely cool, but equally unwise. I can't even imagine what 205 is like. The fastest I've ever been is 137 in an M3, and I was a passenger. The fastest I've ever been ticketed for was 87 in a 70, and it was a bad experience. The fastest I've ever driven was a topped out 120 mph speedo, which means 121, really, the car was at its limit!
There are also other "quasi-criminal" charges available, like careless and imprudent driving, which usually accompanies excessive speeding tickets. remember that dude that filmed himself driving an Enzo on the highway with a cam corder? That was wild. |

FWIW,
Just this morning, a young man in Homestead Florida, decided to take another persons car to the speedway. Yes he stole someone elses car, ran down to the Homestead Motor Speedway and did about 5-10 laps at about 135 miles per hour. When apprehended by Police, he commented on the "handling of the car" and went to jail for grand theft, among other things. Thanks

After the response form LeBenz and Med Mech, I decided to back off (reluctantly) and not to post another reply because I didn't come here tonight to bust anyone's balls...but here I am again, as others here have pretty much summed up what I was thinking. First, I will never condone anyone doing 115 in a 35 mph zone. In NC, as I'm sure it is in most states, a 35 mph zone is reserved for high traffic and/or residential areas. IanMB, if I ever see you (your wife or anyone else) driving that fast in a 35 mph zone, I will be the first to notify law enforcement and hope and pray that you're thrown under the jail to never again enjoy the "priviledge" of driving. All it takes is one child to make a wrong move while you're making a REALLY wrong move (need I say more?). But what really moved me to post again and offer my opinion here (just as Diesel Power said) was the absolutely arrogant response from IanMB (although I still think his story, at the very least, has been embellished) . I noticed that in his first post, his sig included "My name is Ian and I need help" (or something very similar). It no longer appears there. So, maybe there has been an awakening here. I didn't visit this forum tonight to enter into confrontation or with any intention other than to enrich and entertain myself in a way that we all share. But IanMB, you have to understand that this forum is kind of like sitting around the kitchen table at 2 a.m., drinking "too many beers" with your buds - if you say something stupid or cop a belligerent attitude, you're probably gonna get your chops busted, and rightfully so. Although I don't know how old you are, I have the feeling that you're still pretty young. So Ian, I'll offer some advice - relax a little, think before you speak (post) and just enjoy this forum without inflaming anyone. There is a wealth of information along with alot of good people that hang out here.

A raft of penguins on a frozen sea.
Expectant faces look down on me. Shuffle uneasy. The whistler plays. Counting eleven, they begin to pray. Tenuous but clinging, the missing link Joins us, closer than we might think. Some half remembered coarse jungle drum – A naked heart-beat, trill and hum. This world’s no stage for the faint at heart. Each symphony, a sum of parts. Each overture, a sweet foreplay. Let’s crash and burn some other day. Bonded in terror or suspicion deep Tentative tiptoe or giant leap Call down the angels to guide them in A raft of penguins take to the wing. ![]()

And I did not mean to stir up a hornets nest. Iv'e owned a Jag, 2 porsches a lotus Europa a 240 Z and many other fast cars presently I have a Euro 500 SE and a 454 Chevy Blazer as well as my three diesels.
I belive that there are situations where the posted speed limit is a joke. And I have driven over the limit many times . (in 47 years of driving I have never had a moving violation) My irritation was the gentlemans approach to to the police and the judge and the fact that it was in a 35 mph zone. That to me is a whole lot different than an experenced driver with a proper car that has the right tires, brakes etc going 115 on a deserted section of hiway with no passengers. I do voulunteer work for out countys Sherrifs Dept. And can tell you that the Deputies and State Police in this county are of the highest caliber and should I be caught going over the limit I would treat them with respect that they deserve...... William...
I don't think you stirred up the nest, you just responded to it. I think we all like to play with our cars. I agree with you completely, as I've had various cars and bikes well into triple digit mphs, but on Interstates at a time when traffic was not a factor. Two cliches come to mind..."discretion is the better part of valor" and "there's a time and a place for everything". I, unlike you, have unfortunately received a few "rewards" (nothing real big) from law enforcement personnel in my travels, but have always shown respect, as they are simply doing their job. Not to mention, if you're in a situation where a police officer, or especially a judge, has such potential influence on your future, it's not an intelligent move to make an ass of oneself. Again, I still have my doubts whether the previous poster was embellishing or completely fabricating the account of his wife's exploits, because I am at a total loss to think that any law enforcement officials would let someone slide so easily for such a serious violation. But indeed, if it's true, I just hope that the two of them don't spawn. Arrogance, combined with idiocy is never a pretty sight.

Bill.
I had promised myself to drop this and not post anymore, but I think I ought to just answer some of your questions. *I'm not here to debate or argue. I'm not here to troll* And this response is only for your benefit. So can we please not make a million more posts?* I am not a youngster and, most unfortunately in your eyes, I have already "spawned" and have two fine adult children, one of whom is about to get married and "spawn" more speeding maniacs. I am telling the whole truth, but you needn't believe me and I can go quietly into the night. I apologize for offending your senses. I have no motivation or time to "look cool." I'm frankly way past that age. It was not in the state of North Carolina in which my wife sped. It was in the Appalachian mountains in West Virginia. There were no speed limits posted. Well, it was still outrageous speeding if the road were to have a 55 mph speed limit. BUt the road was truly uphill and it was straight. On both sides were forest. My wife was in one of her father's car, and yes, good old grandpa has a long glorious history of ticking off the police in fast automobiles. I live outside New York City in Connecticut and we were there for just a little countryside R&R. Due to the traffic and potholes, its rough trying to even drive 45 mph on a New York City highway. Back to my contempt for law enforcement. Its good that you respect them that much. I once did but, due certain tragic events in NYC, I have lost all respect. Now, I'm not going to share that and start a whole new flame-fest. And be falsely accused of being a bald faced liar to boot. I don't need that. I made a little joke about "I need help." It relates to my love addiction to MB cars. I removed it because sharing about cars in this environment is no fun. So, I won't even begin talking about cars. You make it sound like I have some illicit drug habit. I didn't get the ticket nor did I get "arrested," so my contemptous behavior could not "influence my future." I am sure you hate me even more now. Since it was unbecoming conduct, my wife requests that I ask you why don't you move to get her disbarred from the legal profession as well? |

Anyone that drives 205 in public should have their driving privileges immediatly revoked. I guess unless you are famous football player though, then its okay because who cares if you kill an innocent person...

am I the only one who's gonna ask this? What car were you in? I've gotten a ticket for 64 in a 35 (two lanes on both sides, no houses or kids), and I've gotten pulled over for doing 110 (no ticket), and both times I think I was perfectly safe while doing so. I do agree that the police officers were much nicer than they needed to be (64 in 35 gave me $130 ticket which shoulda been much more w/ possible licence suspension, and 110 cop let me off completely), but I think that some speed limits are a "quick fix" to a greater problem of driver safety. If more drivers were considerate and careful while driving, we wouldn't have to have such rediculously low speed limits. Just my opinion.

Speaking as a person that has been in a C4 at 148mph when the driver decided it should go across a field spinning, I can't imagine what would happen at 205. Yikes..
Maybe I'm getting old. Actually I know I am, because I got out of that C4, laughed and lit a smoke while we waited for the highway patrol. I miss speeding, I'd do it more if I could. Just too much to loose, too little to work with and not enough car, which is no accident, the later. 205. Damn.. Perhaps one day when all the people that love and depend on me die I'll be able to risk myself like that again. A guy can dream anyway..
